A neighbor where I used to live, had a similar situation where the cars kept going when the road didn't, and they ended up in his garage.

After having his garage rebuilt several times, he made a raised box, framed with railroad ties 4 rows high, filled it with dirt, and landscaping.

No vehicle ever made it past that, and it had the ability to decelerate the crashing vehicles, kind of like a race track safer barrier.

That price is not too bad but I would expect new or almost new pipe for 8$ a foot (we figure 7.04 for 4" and 12.26$ for 6", we don't use 5" anymore, it's considered an odd size in my industry).
Without knowing what state your in, or what your options are as far as pipe goes...that might be your best option, if your sold on pipe ballards.

I don't think that you can build a fence that will withstand a car weighing several thousand pounds crashing into it, even if you pour substantial concrete foundations. It's just going to be more expensive to fix and take longer to do so.

Thanks. I'm in Florida. This is unused pipe but part of a liquidation. I think I'm over the bollard idea but I have some other projects I'm mind and would stockpile it if it was a good price.

hmm -- why not build a pit inside corner of that post that keeps getting hit and have another fence to keep everyone else from going into the pit inside the pit.

On the other hand - when you made thee comment that if post is sheared , insurance won't pay?! did you even ask HOW to make other drivers pay when they crash? this would give you ideas what to modify as per YOUR insurance suggestion. So , give your insurance a call with theoretically scenarios.

How about several plastic 55 gallon drums filled with water?

Large reflector strips might help also, especially when it comes to your liability if some moron gets hurt.

As an aside, I took a gentleman into custody one time who had driven into a guardrail barrier at the end of a dead-end street. He was shocked that an officer could walk up to his vehicle while he was driving. He was unaware that his vehicle was not moving, and the transmission was smoking heavily from trying to push the guardrail barrier.

Maybe his speedometer still showed a speed if the drive wheels were turning. It's good that you caught him.

If it would ok in your area a nice wide ditch with a high berm on the back would catch a few cars and do so rather safely.

Reconyx makes a good security camera you can also use for a game plot or trail, It can capture the liscense of the vehicle at 50MPH, and take over 4000 pictures (4000 pictures) on one set of batteries. It not cheap, but at least you have the culprits. I am sure the materials and your time add up to a good amount.

You may be able to work with your insurance company on the price if they keep having to pay out,or perhaps cabelas could specialorder it for you and use some of their discounts to offset the price, not sure about special orders, but worth a shot. Prevention only last so long, before you'll be back at repairs, and there is no liabilty involved with this.

A couple of large boulders would do the trick.

I have a corner just like that, which is where I stack all the small boulders (1-3' in diameter) I need to get out of the way. A while back a prom queen and her date ripped the undercarriage of their rental car out on the boulders. They made it over the boulders, but the car was not drive-able after that. They also spilled their beer. :)
