JD 850,JD 810A(mine),JD LX280(dad)
They are basically the same tractor, except for HP. Can a 3800 really "do" that much more? Does the extra HP help the tractor do any more? I know that you get more power out of more HP, but on the same frame, will it matter?

I have been using a JD850 with only @24+/- HP for years so I just dont know if the 3200 will have enough PTO HP to really be different than the JD. But, my little JD has seemed plenty strong enough.

Local dealer has several gear/HST models of both 3200/3800 4wd with loader. There is only about $1,500 difference between models. Only about $1,000 more each for HST.

Every grand more added to price puts the tractor that much further beyond reach.

My brother and I just got a geared 3200 on Saturday and with the little bit of time I put on it appears the tractor runs out of traction before power. I have a hydro B model but went gear for this one to save some coin and I think it will be fine for the amount that we'll be using it.

Only you can answer if more hp will do it for you but one thing to consider is the L3800 will have better resale value if and when you decide to trade.:)

What do you plan to use it for mainly? I have the L2800 and I might have to slow down brush hogging up hill... but will do everything else with no problems. I would love to use someone's L3400 at my place to see if I'm missing anything... but I don't think so.

More HP = more fuel (in my mind).

One thing to keep in mind, the L3200 gear model doesn't have a live PTO. Both HST models and the L3800 have live PTO. This is only important if you are going to be doing a lot of bush hogging or certain other types of PTO work.

You will get that $1500 back when it comes time to sell/trade it. You'll get the HST grand back several times over then too - can't give a gear tractor away in these parts.

If the primary tasks involve PTO driven stuff (bushhog, mower, blower, tiller) then the answer is YES.

If the tasks involve ground engaging activities (plowing, blading, FEL work) then no it wont matter much.

Another benefit to the power is if you travel in road gear with any kind of load. As an example, We have a few firewood hauling trailers and ocassional haul loads ~3 miles of roads with a few hills. One hill sometimes will cause me to need to downshift. More power would be of benefit.

Well stated, When I bought the L3400HST I was looking for a L2800HST, the dealer said the L3400HST was about the same price (might have been $100) as the L3400 had been on the lot before a price increase and the L2800 was caught in the increase. So I figured why not? If they are about the same price.. But I realize that circumstance isn't going to happen all the time. I do mostly loader work, and don't "Road" the tractor much, I lose traction before running out of horsepower, I am sure the L2800 would have done just as well for me.

Glad you clarified that. It seems there are some members on here that

A. Cant take humor
B. Cant take anyone saying anything negative about "their" brand
C. Are just plain uptight and like to start crap

I am really glad you understand that I am just trying to have fun with you. Especially after you, myself, and chilley807's herky-jerky saga.

As bad as my hitch is though, it isnt the only tractor i get the chance to operate. So if I have a yearning for a smooth hitch, I go jump on dads 61 year old 8n for awhile.:D But after a few minutes with NO power steering, no throttle pedal, no loader, and sloppy steering, I find myself quickly realizing that my hitch really isnt that bad:laughing:

No LD1 it is all good:thumbsup: Your dad's 8N sounds about like the old family Super A I learned on.. yep the 2PT hitch was smooth as well as the middle hydraulics for the cultivators. Yes I said 2pt hitch not 3pt. But as you pointed out absolutely no power steering, no loader, no throttle pedal and a total of 3 forward speeds and 1 reverse. Man it was hard to find that sweet spot when 3rd was mostly road gear. AND the thing drank gasoline like it was cheap or something... wait. when it was a current tractor gas was about 19 cents a gallon. Oh well it was a pretty unique and cool old tractor but I would not have much use for it today.
