I have a JD 506 - 5 foot bush hog for sale in the local Craiglslist...I am asking $600 with hardly a bite. Is this a fair price or just not good timing for a old 5 footer?

Based on my own search (in Ohio) for a bush hog last year, I would say that's high unless it looks new. Probably $500 is more like it, if it's in good shape. I picked up a 4 footer in "fair" condition for $250.

If it's a HD cutter & in good shape. It's probably worth it.

You have to have someone who wants it. If its in fair shape most of the paint and is a heavier unit its probly worth it. But i too would think $500 to be more of a mover price. But if someone wants one that $600 price sure beats the price of a new one.

Keep it up, you will get some bites eventually, most of the cl folks are looking for super deals.

forgot to add . I bought my 5 ft MD for $500.00 when I bought my tractor 7-8 yrs ago ??? .I think They have gone up alot since then

I think that it is a fair price as well, after all it is a "John Deere". And green in color. List at 600 and let them talk you down to 500.

Seems to me like when the word "marine" is put in front of a part or item the price jumps the same goes for "John Deere". I paid $500 for a brand new bush hog when I bought mine although that was 9 years ago. Seems that craigslist shoppers expect cheap deals where they feel they ar "stealing" something...

Theres one on tractorhouse right now in ohio for $1200:confused2:

No doubt the JD name should make it worth more to re-sell, but honestly, most people out there looking for a 5' cutter, are probabally seeing all of the $200-$300 no-name cutters and probabally not looking at yours.

Did you post a good picture with it? Is it in good shape? You'd be suprised at what ~$30 of paint will do for the re-sell. If it looks bad, people are going to assume it has been abused.

And I am not sure of the specs of the 506. I dont know if it is a light duty, med-duty, or a heavy duty??

But your biggest issue is that someone who actually knows what the cutter is, or how good it is, probabally is looking for a buyer who dont. Someone who thinks its just another $200 cutter.

Generally as a common rule ... $100 per foot...used, in very good condition.

That is fairly nice paint, no bends, leaks or welds. Its a whole new ball game when you get over 6' and into the heavy duty one.

Instead of OVER 6' and heavy duty, what about just 6' and heavy duty??

I have a Bushhog 306. It is only 6', but probabally weighs more than alot of 7' cutters. (1100lbs). BIG difference between a 6'-650lb cutter and a 6'-1100lb cutter.

I wont tell you that I only gave $200 for it....

Oops, too late:laughing:

Any chance we can get a pic of what it looks like??

Assuming this John Deere Brush Hog - 5 footer is it, I can see why you dont get calls. No offense, and the rust wouldnt scare me, but that is probabally the reason. It just dont look pretty if ya know what I mean. If it wasnt a "john deere", you'd be lucky to get $200 around me.

A fresh paint job if you are interested and you will probabally have a TON of calls @ $600.

And one more tip (it too me awhile to find it), I see you title it as "brush hog" And in the listing have "bush hog" That is good but I would also include in the listing "bushhog" all one word AND "rotary cutter". This will draw more views when people search. I happened on some really good deals only because I was just browsing and not searching and seen stuff listed as brush hog and bush hog when I only used to search bushhog. Now I typically search all of the above.

Just a thought

yea if that is it its priced to high at $600, more like $350..

here is a craiglist tip, add tags in your postings, so it will show up in alot of different searches, for example this is what I would add in the ad:

Keywords: bush hog, john deere, mower, tractor, pto, farm, cutter

With the above any search for the "keywords" would return your ad in those results, the more keywords you add the better, but don't add keywords that doesn't pertain, ie car, house, etc as that will just get your ad flagged.

Clean up the pictures, too. After painting, you'll want to showcase your item.

Right now it just looks like another hunk of metal in a scrap heap. Put a little work into it and get rid of the background clutter. You'll be amazed at how much better it looks and sells.

Oh, and put the tail wheel back on. Looks like less of a "basket-case" And dont take this personally or the wrong way. This is just constructive criticism to try and help you out.

EDIT: That is if it is indeed your ad

I'm in the NE as well and actually have been thinking of buying a brush hog, but strangely there's very few on craigslist in my area. If that is indeed the ad its probably quite a bit more expensive than what I've been seeing out there. The ones I've been seeing are under $500, and don't look as rough... though as i've mentioned there haven't been a lot to go on.

Yea assuming thats it $450 seems more like it to me and probly will only get $350 or 400 out of it. Those who dont know wont buy it and those who know probly wont give you close to what you want as they know the demand for a rusted cutter is not high by those not sure of quality vs shiny paint!

Bought my JOHN DEERE 503 2 years ago off craigslist for $200. Had a few minor welds on the back (as these are not heavy duty). But still works great and a great buy. As others have said; toss on some fresh paint (maybe even some new decals from the dealer and you'll offload it in no time.
