Parker or Gates?

So I am needing some hoses and fittings and I wrote a local hose maker
and they asked me if I wanted Parker hose and fittings or Gates hose and fittings.

What do I want? My only prerequisite is the fittings are silver in color to match the rest of the new tractor.

Both companies make quality products. Parker probably has a larger selection of hose and ends but in your case I doubt that would be a consideration. May want to check on the color of the ends because some of the newer ones are yellow/gold colored.

I agree, both brands are very good. I used to sell Weatherhead. All of the brands did the job. Just get the correct rating for your use.

Either Parker or Gates, both good quality. Ask which has best price and go with that one. The silver color is the more common anti-corrosion coating on fittings but the yellow/gold color seems more resistant to high humidity and or salt & other chemicals.
I don't know if this is still the same but about 8 years ago the Gates factory rep told me Wheatherguard was a division of Gates. Good quality too.

....and as typical, the more I learn the more questions I generate.

I asked a hose supplier for a price for 5 hoses and they came back at me w/ a
price approaching $160.00, Gates or Parker. THEN I learned that you can make hoses with a H
Press and I have an H Press. So now I am trying to get a list of parts for
the tools I need to do this. I believe Weatherhead sells a Home Shop Press Kit ,
a T-400-17 ...It is like 1200 bux, I can't do that, so why can't a guy buy JUST
the parts needed to press 1/4" stuff?

I am trying to get those part numbers alone so I can shop them. I see some on

In a past thread a gent suggested that Weatherhead fittings are smaller than
others. I'm looking hard at that because the BX25's BH manifold is insanely tight,
I mean it is nuts tight, and should I ever need to replace, I want to be armed
w/ the right tooling. It's raining here, I guess I should get a magnifying glass
after the rain and see if I can read anything other than CHINA on the fittings.
Then if I can ID those OE fittings look at whatever flavor it uses. I am leaning
toward Weatherhead now.

I am looking at this because I am making a grapple for BX25, and I want to get
really **** w/ the hoses lengths, (plus be able to make repairs and other
accessories in the future) I want to make them myself and not be pressured into
coming up w/ a length end to end then trying it. I want to press on an end,
hand fit it up and lay the hose where it goes and mark it perfect.

I found a picture of the Weatherpack shop kit deal. I see part numbers but I do not understand the black and silver rings, do I need both if I just get 1/4" die?

So I think I need ot shop for the following IF I want to just do 1/4" for now;

One of Each:

T-400-2C
T-400-8
T-400-10 or -11 OR BOTH? ANYONE KNOW?
T-400-17p

Go to DHH and get the reusable ends and make the hoses yourself. You can easily make them up yourself and they will be perfect. :thumbsup: I replaced every hose on my dozer this way, it worked out great. Forget about doing the press deal, you will just be looking at trouble in the long run without have all the correct stuff, along with spending waaaaaaaay to much money. But then you may not want to use their stuff because some of it does come from China.

VERY nice job on the Case my friend...boy that was a LOT of work.
I have considered reuseable but so many connections on the BX25 are in tight areas that smaller I thunk is better.

I think I can make a crimper for about 2-250 bux. I need to buy 2- rings and one die, then I can make a pusher and I own a H-Press. So, just add parts and I will be good to go. Were looking into this method hard.

I think the black and silver rings are different thichnesses, so you stop at the correct point when crimping the fitting to the hose

Thanks guys, amazing what a little hardener in the paint & some new decals will do. It is my first tractor and it was finally time to replace a few things and spruce it up some. It has been a very good machine for me.

Personally I'd just get the hoses made instead of looking to do it yourself as the tooling will kill you cost wise; unless you intend to make lots of hoses for yourself or as a business. Plus if something goes wrong with a hose, you can grouse to the company that made it for you. You may or may not get recourse from the company if a failure occurs. If you do it yourself, you have no recourse than more time and money out of your life and wallet. But if you want to do it yourself for the satisfaction of saying, "I did that," then go for it.

Parker makes so much stuff for hydraulics, it's not even funny. I have no idea if Gates quality is still top notch. All their factories and office buildings along Broadway in Denver are either abandoned, converted to other uses, or demolished.

Oh yeah, that's one heck of a dozer!

Please do yourself a favor and shop for the hose. I tried a local vendos for some 3/8" hose to use the reusable ends and was quoted $7 a INCH!!! Some of the local hydraulic shops are scalpers. The online hose suppliers were only wanting $1 foot. Just shop. bjr

I bought a used discontinued Gates crimper setup on Ebay and do not regret it but then I have lots of hydraulic hoses to replace. If they are adjustable, you can crimp newer fittings.

Parker or Gates... Either is fine. You should know that most if not all of the fittings are coming out of china now. Yep $8.00 for a chinese fitting.

Alfagomma is good too if you have a dealer handy.

I dont think your going to build a crimper that will perform properly. The dies have to mesh and end up at a specific finished size.

Your best bet if you want to DIY is to find a used press on ebay or similar.

As an aside, yous prices dont seem that bad. Remember most of the cost is in the fittings, not the hose. So the more ends the more money.

Also certain ends like swivels, 90* and 90* reducing ends are particularly expensive. I paid about $14 each for 6, 90* reducing swivel NPT ends. My last hydraulic order cost me over $400 for 8 hoses, some 3/4 and some 1/2.

I missed some replies till today, THANK YOU all whom replied.

Here is what I did. I had received a PM from an old timer on this list and
his talk seemed to do the walk, all praising Weatherhead. I went completely
askew from Parker and Gates and ended up w/ 2- Weatherhead T-450
machine (s) and one T400-17 bowl and pusher for a H-Frame press.

Obviously I am now going to attempt make my own hoses to my lengths. It
will be a dream to be able to make up one end, hand tighten it and lay in the
hose as I see fit THEN cut it exactly where I want it cut instead, of trying to
do measurements in thin air. Yep, I am that ****. :laughing: But it is coming along
nicely.

It's a long story on the acquisition as to why 3 machines but the math
worked. I will have at least one machine for sale soon and I believe I will
offer it on this list discounted to TBN members eventually.

Anyways,
Inclusive in my deal was collet sizes 1/4",3/8",1/2",3/4" and 1", all the T400
series for U Series fittings. In the deal were 2 collets for A/C lines, that I
may actually have use for in the future but would sell I do believe. I also got
several rings, black and silver and yellow, and other stuff.

I learned quickly about Weatherhead collet rubbers / cages and ordered in
all new cages for my cracked rubber collets. All collets were stripped to 8
bare pieces of metal and they were fit into the new cages. My fingers still
hurt!

I have learned much, I have a mountain of learning ahead of me.
I have not so much as pressed one fitting yet fore I am getting all my ducks
in a row first, so as to try to not to make any mistakes, and to crimp to
specs, AND do an aesthetically pleasing and functional way of things.

Wow, Artisan, that is Really overboard! Did you buy them new, or
find some used bargains?

I, too, would like a setup like the T400-17 for my shop press, but the
$1200 price tag scared me away. I considered just buying the dies
and collars for the 3/8 and 1/4, but I have not seen them come up on
eBay for a reasonable price. I would make my own pusher.

Let us know how they work when you start making hoses.

I have quite a few systems now, one is complete with Electric Greenlee Pump,
quick disconnects a set of dies from 1/4" thru 1" that I want to keep,
but, if offered enough I would part w/ it.

All the others in various states of needing additional parts. I bought a
smörgåsbord of stuff from a guy all in various states of disrepair.
I make older stuff like new again.*

I have a T400-17 Bowl and Pusher only for an H-Frame press I would sell.
They are "minty" . You can pick up Dies for about 77 dollars EA on EBAY,
the rubber "Cages" are replaceable if you buy them and they crack. There
are 2 sizes of those cages FWIW. I have some extra rings too.

I have one extra T400-17 Pusher less bowl I would sell, "minty" .

I am close to having another T-450 machine w/ Simplex 10K hand pump
and hose. I ordered a new hose for it yesterday. I am so ****, I opened it
up, tossed out the old fluid, and I am replacing the fluid in that hand pump
w/ factory recommended ISO 32, I got the new oil yesterday. The hose
will come in a few days, I will fill er' up w/ oil and post pics of it. Oops,
I may need to order a quick disconnect for it. I need to look in my pile O parts.

I am not too sure if I will sell it, it is coming out NICE. Naw, I will sell it,
I have another exact machine so I will sell it. Gawd I like that hand pump
though! ha!

* I rebuilt a Collins Thread-O-Matic 22A machine several years ago, sold
it to a guy in Hawaii. When he learned I had painted it he wanted his
money back, this was the day I was to drive it to the dock. I told him I
would gladly give him his money back if upon arrive it was not everything
I represented it to be. He called from the dock and THANKED ME over and
over for selling him such a nice machine. (I cheat, I have a Glass Bead
Blaster that works WELL) :thumbsup: ....and I won't let stuff go unless it is to
"my" liking.
