since a lot of us here at tbn have tractors/equipment, we all need to fuel up. so i am guessing quite a few of us have atleast one of those newer pain in the *** 5 gallon fuel plastic containers.

today i found out that one of my 5 gal. diesel cans was leaking. well come to find out the top ring on the cap that screws on the container and holds the spout in place, started to rip off, allowing a gap between the spout assembly and fuel can. this is the third problem i have had with a blitz fuel container spout breaking. i have bought new spouts assemblies before but today i drew the line.

i tore the stupid thing apart and using parts from another broken spout assembly, i was able to actually fix it and get it working again and no leaks. i surprised myself that i actually got it all back together. before i was done, i ripped out the little switch on top that changes between the "store" & "pour" positions. now no fighting to keep that switch pushed back when trying to push the lever to allow fuel to come out. the only thing is the cap i used to replace the broken cap came off a 2 gal. gas container with a spring loaded spout. (that spout split at the top that is why i had the spare cap to use.) well any way that gas cap screws on harder then it should, but hey i would rather put up with that then give BLITZ more money for a replacement spout that is junk anyway. like i say i have already gone through 3. and i do not abuse them or let them sit in sun so expansion is not the cause for problems. i think they are just plain junk.

any one else out there having problems with these newer fuel cointainers? seems like they could build them a lot better. what do you all think?

And everyone laughed at me for stock piling the old vented cans...

Hey Namesay - have some fun with your frustration and vent to Blitz USA.
Blitz USA - Contact Info BTW - They appear they filed for Chapter 11 in November 11. No info if they have worked through it or still in reorganization. But venting (no pun intended) to the manufacture will at least let them know their product is not meeting the expectations of the consumers.

I can't stand the new "safety" cans. Thinking about a 50 gal. transfer tank that I can put on truck bed with forks to run to pump and fill. Then I will put in shop with a pump. No more "safe" 5gal. cans!

I saw the writing on the wall 10-12 years ago when rubbermaid made gas and kerosene cans. My father designed then for rubbermaid (and gott) and was involved with all the lawsuits and CARB litigations simply because people are stupid. I don't know how many lawsuits rubbermaid had to pay out because people would have gas cans in their house or be smoking in the living room and heating up the gas cans by a wood stove or furnace... Rubbermaid ceased production of those cans shortly after. I thought blitz and wedco were the only two major gas container producers left these days...

I refuse to buy the new cans. I have about a half dozen of the old Gott 5 gallon fuel containers and guard them closely. ;)

However, I rarely use a can. I have a 300 gallon bulk tank for my tractors. (and a 600 gallon tank for the trucks)
About the only thing I use cans for is the lawn mowers and chainsaws.

You should try a No Spill gas can. NO-SPILL INC. | Lenexa, KS 66215 I tried one and ended up buying two more. They actually work well. They aren't quite as fast as the old fashioned vented cans, but they are way faster than the new ones. They also don't spill fuel like the safety cans do. All in all, I'd say that they're 85% to 90% as fast as the old fashioned cans and I actually find them handier. They aren't cheap, but in my opinion they are worth it.

for sure another item where "you get what you pay for applies".

Cheap price / poor quality / poor performance almost always linked at birth.

I've given up on plastic fuel cans. They are just not safe or durable.

The last thing I want to do is store gas on a plastic can in the garage, and storing it outside means a lot of expansion and contraction that cracks the plastic and leads to leaks.

The new safety metal cans like the Eagle or Justrite are a better alternative. The old "Jerry" cans work pretty well to, but are not air tight.

Now I'm installing two 300 gallon fuel oil tanks for my boiler, that will also eliminate the need for small diesel cans for the tractor. But gasoline will have to be in the metal cans.

Check out VP race fuels website for 5 gal square jugs, big mouth, vent, long flexible spout if needed. Not cheap $30, but 3x more plastic used to manu. than the other crap. come in 3 colors. The caps are a work of art. Worth every penny.

thanks for all the replys guys. i never knew there was other makers of fuel containers. only sell BLITZ in my area and they run around $13 for a 5 gal. the $30 would be worth it as much as i refuel. i have been toying with the idea of a bulk tank (like was mentioned) to fork into my truck, get fuel, bring it home and set it off truck to have to refuel, but my concerns are condensation. a bigger tank means bigger air pocket once fuel level is lowered. that means more condensation/water build up. guess i could put a fuel/water separator filter on it, but still worry about condensation. i fill my equipment every time when i am done with it, so the 5 gal containers make sence. i would have to store my bulk tank outside too. something to think about. anyone else make/buy a bulk diesel tank and have it work good? give me some ideas.

Condensation is not an issue if the tank is not vented.
Use a vent that can be opened when draining fuel then closed when just storing.
That stops the "breathing" that constantly draws moisture laden air in as temperatures vary.
Be sure the tank is stout enough to contain any pressure and don't have it in the sun.

I have both metal safety fuel cans and VP plastic fuel jugs. I much prefer the VP plastic jugs. They are selling on Ebay and other sites in many colors/combinations. You can make a spout or get spout replacement parts at any hardware store.

Now technically they are.... "Intended only for use as a rapid refueling device for racing vehicles used in professional off road and closed course competition racing events. It is not a portable fuel container as described by ASTM, EPA, ARB or other state or federal agencies. Intended for racing fuel only; not to be used for street legal fuels."

I have no issue with their disclaimer since I consider my property a closed course site for racing tractors, lawn mowers, chain saws and other power equipment.:D

+1.

We have a small one for 2 cycle fuel, and it works great.

Too bad the major oil companies don't sell motor oil anymore in those "dome stackers" pails. I still have a couple old Union 76 metal oil pails, the spouts work well, and water couldn't easily get in these pails either. Everything is plastic now, but I am not sure about diesel being stored and transported home in a plastic motor oil pail. Been doing it ok so far, but still worry a bit.

I've gone to this type of gas can. They pour quickly, the plastic spouts work very well and they are surprisingly durable. A little pricey compared to the older plastic containers, but they will take a lot of abuse and last longer. Another benefit is that they meet the stringent transport requirements that are required in several locations.

I have not found a plastic container that does not suck.

Amen to that! I wish that metal ones were more reasonably priced. Although when you consider the less aggravation I guess they are worth it.
