I'm working on a YM180 that I bought for parts but I started to wonder if could get it running. The thermostart cup is missing and been replaced with a generic fuel filter. does anyone have an idea for something to replace it with? The fuel filter would have been ideal if it had 3 inlets.

Someone put a fuel filter where the thermostart is???? You definetly need filtration but you can start it without the thermostart unless its REALLY cold. Since you have a domestic model you should be able to find the thermostart parts at the nearest yanmar dealer - maybe - but your are probably better off calling Jamieson Tractors or Hoye.

Hoye sells a kit : http://www.hoyetractor.com/mm5/merc...e_Code=HTE&Product_Code=TS-KIT&Category_Code=

I interpreted what pennwalk said to mean somebody had used the fuel filter as a reservoir for the Thermostart, since it has a built-in inlet and outlet, is designed for fuel, etc. That's actually a fairly clever idea; I have seen some filters with 3 ports.

The correct part from Hoye is cheap and easy, though, and will mount to all the brackets correctly. I don't think it takes very much fuel to make the Thermostart operate. Probably the fuel in the lines would be enough for it to fire off if functional. You could try it as-is and see how it goes. If the injection pump moves fuel to the lines and there is compression, it will probably run.

The previous owner used the fuel filter to connect the return line from the injectors to the line to the fuel tank and the thermostart line is hanging free. That is the king of stuff I am correcting. What I was looking for is a cheap temporary homemade idea until I can decide if it is parts.

I don't have the mounting bracket either or the cup and very Rarely ever use it here in Ga. My TS.Igniter worked after running a test lead to it and then I wired it to the Ign. switch and this is all I used. It's off an old Antifreeze tester and a old fuel line. What really works good and to fill it just give it a squeeze and stick it in the the Fuel Can or Tank. I leave it off most of the time.;)

Back in the carburetor days most cars had some sort of return and a lot of cars used a 3 line filter to accomplish that. AMC for one I can think of right off in late 70's ish the return line would be the one you want to go to the TS unit.

fwtw if you dont want to wait on Hoye and UPS the AMC filters are 5/16 though with a 1/4 return (I have one hanging on my filter peg board still) and probably cost a few bucks at the zone. May need some line stretching or find another one with smaller ports on all.

You might want to go to a John Deere dealer and buy one for a 950 tractor insted of the Yanmar part. It is the same size and shape as the Yanmar part and fits the same bracket, but has no cap and fills from the injector return line. Never have to fill the bottle, always full. Line in from the injector return, line out, to the fuel tank return line. I did this years ago and it works great, never a issue. Good luck,
Chris

That's interesting. The JD dealer is nearby and I have been thinking about how much it costs to drive across town what with the high cost of gas. Thanks

That sounds like a great idea. I get tired of removing the loader bracket just to check my bottle to see if there's any fuel in it
