Just phoned a John Deere dealership in Alberta, next Province east of us, you won't believe it, a whopping $2,000 cheaper. YES, TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS cheaper. I almost fell off my chair.

My local dealer was trying to charge me for setup fees, $300 worth, this new dealer told me that is included in the price of the machine. His price for the machine, with setup fees included, was cheaper then the local dealers price for the machine with no setup fees.

X748SE with the 7-Iron is what I am getting!

u shouldnt be worried about pushing anything with your 700 series let alone any type of horse crap. my tiny 325 tractor pushes anything including wet topsoil with not a hiccup. just look at my video and look how full the blade was while i backfilled my trench. coulda handled more

JDTank, let's be clear here, you ordered it? When is delivery (or maybe pick up in this case)? Congrat's (if you did in fact buy it).

Going to order it in about 2 weeks time, just before the pre-season rebate expires.

The dealer I am dealing with is 12 hours away, but I still have a lot of trucking connections, including my dad who is still an owner operator for a heavy haul company in the prairies. He goes through this place all the time, and he said he would pick it up and bring it out this way for free. So I will save $2,000 by buying from Alberta instead of Saskatchewan.

My dealer even tried to charge me $289 for setup fee's. The dealer I am dealing with in Alberta informed me today that setup fee's should be included in the cost of the machine, and I was being hosed by my local dealer.

Really no incentive for me to buy local. What I understand from the dealer in Alberta is my local dealer is not allowed to refuse warranty work on a machine, since John Deere is a worldwide network. My local dealer won't repair machines bought in the U.S, but every other dealer in Canada will.

Long story short, my local dealer has there nose in the air from the stick that's up there ***

JD, not sure if you have ordered yet. PM me if you'd like to know who I'd recommend you have a chat with to see what kind of price my local dealer can offer you. I've bought all my tractors (X585/X748/2720/3320) and 7 quads from him. Very fair.

I informed my local dealer I was going to purchase from Alberta about 5 days ago, and he didn't talk to me for 5 days :laughing: He insisted I must buy something from them in order for them to continue to give me quotes, or you know, DO THERE JOB!

I managed to get them down in price to $17,000 for the X748SE with the 7-Iron deck. The cheapest quote I found in Alberta was about $16,400.

For $600 difference, I think I might be better off to go with my local dealer. I started thinking about it, and I am a bit concerned about, what happens if I get a lemon machine? They will reluctantly do warranty work, but they wouldn't do an exchange. Any business I need from them in the past will be a nightmare because they will always remember I didn't support them. If $600 means I can get good service and never have to worry about such things, then so be it. Won't be the first $600 I've wasted.

I'm not sure I would drive 12 hours to save $600, and I am assuming that is one way. The bad thing about the dealer next to you, once a dick, always be a dick, only $600 richer.
If you get a tractor with him, it sounds like he would be a nightmare to work with regardless. If he gives you grief about work needed to be done later on, just go to the district representative and keep going up the ladder to get things done.

More than likely you won't have any trouble with yours anyway because those tractors are reliable. It is just to bad that some dealers treat customers that way.

One of there salesman here even told me "we won't do any warranty work on a machine that is not bought from this dealership" I chewed him a new one and explained to him that John Deere is a worldwide network, you don't have a choice if you want to give me warranty work or not, you are obligated to support the product you sell, even if you hate me bitterly, it doesn't matter. I made a phone call to the district manager the same afternoon, who manages all the dealerships this parent company owns, gave him the full story and the salesman's name. He assured me that no matter where I get a machine, they will do anything and everything possible to make me happy. He gave me his direct line and said if you have any more trouble with that guy just phone me. The last 2 times I have went in the dealership, he doesn't so much as look at me.

Funny enough, the latest new quote I was given by a different salesman, has an additional "Prairie Coast Exclusive discount" on the bottom, they knocked off another $350 after that episode!

I think there mad at me because I was going to do this same purchase about a year ago, and I had them make out a quote and get everything ready to order (but I had not even applied for financing yet, so it's not like the machine was on it's way) and I had to cancel because we needed the money elsewhere at the last second.

But, as I said, for $600, I know I will get better service out of them, maybe not the best, but at least it's always going to be leverage for me. I can always remind them I purchased the machine from them, and hopefully play that card for years to come. That works in my favor even more since they made such a big stink about buying from them.

Bit confused :confused: How did $2000 cheaper become $600 cheaper? First total with 12% was $18056, so minus $2000 = $16056. Then you said you are now at $17000 vs $16400. Did your dealer knock off $1000 (including 12% tax) and the other add $344?

Then you said the local dealer would not talk to you for 5 days.

If I had found a $2000 better deal I would have stopped talking to the local dealer, not the other way around.

What happened is the quote I received for $18,056, did not include there pre-season discount of $500. Once I informed the local dealer I was going to buy from Alberta for the price of $16,400 (extra few hundred came from finance fee's and gas to go get the machine) he replied back with another quote for the machine I want, the X748SE.

When I look at this new quote he gave me, it has 3 discounts on it.

Pre-Season discount = $500
Cash and finance discount = $294
Extended PCE discount = $350

So all that combined gives me $1,144 off of the price I originally received. Plus, that's $1,144 I don't have to pay 12% tax on, so the bill becomes even cheaper.

The "Extended PCE (PrairieCoast Equipment) discount is something I have never seen them give on any quote. I imagine they gave it to me because they don't want to lose the sale. It's not a very high volume dealership, they only sell the smaller machines, riding mowers up to the 5065, anything bigger they don't do. There strictly a riding mower/SCUT/CUT dealership.

So in the end, the new quote I have received is $17,059.68

For $600, why not put the local dealer in my back pocket? As I said, at least I know that if I buy the machine from them, there will be no disputing any service or warranty problems that may arise, especially since I have the district manager on speed dial.

Yes it's still much higher then US prices, but there isn't anything I can do. I did more digging into things and Canadian dealerships ARE allowed to "pass" on warranty work from machines purchased in the U.S by Canadian citizens. Although it makes no sense, it's at there discretion.

Doesn't make any sense to me, the dealership is paid directly by John Deere to perform warranty work. It's bread and butter money for them, but I guess they care more about local support instead, which I can understand.

I would pay the $600 vs a 12 hour trip, it's about 3.3% of the total.
That said, with $1144 in discounts and no 12%; $137 total of $1281 you should be down to $16775 only $375 more. $18056 - $1281= $16775

Stinks that the deal began on a sour note. I hope it works out for you in the end. Buying a new tractor should be a joy, not an experience in frustration.
