Buying Advice 3720 Cab Or 4520 Open Station

Im getting bids at 13%-14.5% off msrp of deere plus a 1500.00 cash bonus and rebates for either machine

the other munkey wrench in this is i already have 60" woods tiller and a 60" brush hog so i would have to replace those if i go with a 40xx series and could keep those with a 3720

My Dad and his Dad operated a 250 acre mixed farm for many years with two horses and a Ford 8N. I suspect they could have figured a way to handle 9-14 acres with a 3720 CAB;););)

I don't know where's you're at but for health reasons a cab is a must. In some states there is the chance of Valley Fever.

A good friend of mine died from it.

Valley fever is a fungal infection caused by coccidioides (kok-sid-ee-OI-deze) organisms. It can cause fever, chest pain and coughing, among other signs and symptoms.

The coccidioides species of fungi that cause valley fever are commonly found in the soil in certain areas. These fungi can be stirred into the air by anything that disrupts the soil, such as farming, construction and wind. The fungi can then be breathed into the lungs and cause valley fever, also known as acute coccidioidomycosis (kok-sid-e-oi-doh-mi-KOH-sis).

Mild cases of valley fever usually go away on their own. In more severe cases of valley fever, doctors prescribe antifungal medications that can treat the underlying infection.

Another reason I will never drive an open tractor are bees. I had a swarm attack my tractor ( it was a closed cab D7 ) and I swear it seemed like it was a solar eclipse. I mean it was 12 noon and there we so many bees hitting the glass the inside of the cab went dark.

Again depending of the work you do you, if you do any land clearing you have the chance of a tree branch smacking you in the face. With a cab it will be deflected by the windshield.

Now lets talk comfort. If your in the cab 8 hours a day being cool in the summer with a nice radio makes life just a tab bit nicer for that time in the cab .

Very valid points made. I haven't heard of the "Valley Fever" but doesn't sound good. As for the bee's, I've never had a problem on my tractor, but I was grazing through my trails (5-10MPH) on my ATV when I went over a in ground bees nest. Felt one land on me, thinking it was a mosquito I went to squish it but had a crunch and a nice sting, then about 15 to 20 more in seconds. I went about 45MPH driving with one eye (stung in one eye and it had swollen up immediately). I'd never gone over 20 through them before and I thought that was fast but feel those things bite is not fun. Went in and took some ibuprofen and had a nice nap. Sounds like you were very lucky to have a cab on your D7 as well.

There is not a lot of 4000 series tractors out there at a fantastic deal, but I did find one, and promptly bought it about a month ago. A 4720 cab with 400 cx loader, 72" mmm, and all kinds of other bells and whistles. After using a 1050 for a few years, all I can say is wow! I will never again have a tractor without a cab if I can help it. It was well under $30000. 2007 with 791 hrs. My thinking was that it was a good enough deal, that I could spend some money on it and still come out ahead. The good news is, it has been perfect. It was even delivered with a tank full of fuel. Just the other morning I had planned to move a little dirt, and it was raing slightly. No problem! I had to cut the wipers on for less than 2 minutes, and had at it. Cutting with the bush hog? No pollen, no dirt, just a little heat from the heater, and listening to the radio. I had looked at the difference between a 3000 and 4000 seriers tractor closely. Ground clearance on the 3000 was an issue for me. I spend some time in the woods, and the thought of hitting a stump kept nagging at me. I'd hate to have to make the decision you are trying to make. Smaller tractor with cab or larger tractor and no cab. It took a while to find what I wanted at a price I thought was reasonable. I am very happy I waited until I did. Patience is indeed a virtue!

If I had to pick between the two, the 3720 with cab would win out. That said, a good slightly used cabbed 4520 would be the first choice.

Get it right the first time around.

What options were you quoted with to have that tractor cost $45,000? Should be in the $30,000 range for a cabbed 4520.

Well, I was just quoted a 4520 w/Cab, Loader, HD bucket and 3 remotes and it was over $45K....

We were able to get a 4520 with EH 3rd SCV, air seat, deluxe grill guard, 400CX loader, rear work lights, HD 73" bucket, & factory stereo right at the $38,000 range. ( I don't have the paperwork in front of me.) 4th & 5th SCV add $1200. (Do not have that option yet.) This is for ag use so it is tax exempt.

Prices may vary across the states.....

We deal with a small Deere dealer that works hard for their business and has the best prices around. I imagine the other dealers just are not able to go that low on the pricing so they can keep their doors open. Just a thought though.

I guess high 30's is a little more reasonable but that is one GREAT deal! Some used I see are more than that:confused:

Yes I agree it would probably be in the upper 30s. I did install some of the items to save on dealer installation labor costs- Which would have been around $500. I enjoy doing that work anyway. (Such as 3rd SCV installation, etc. etc.)

It's amazing how much prices vary, but hey, you gotta pay your employees and you have to keep your bills paid. If the dealer believes he needs to sell it for that price, great. Some have more overhead than others.

That's a nice price.
