Thanks again for your encouragement and help. I am going to grind down and re-weld the shaft after I put a steel jacket on the shaft - then weld the pipe jacket around the weld - gives me a backup. What about install? Spent 30 min before the rain started and can't seem to get the u-joint lined up at the same time as the flywheel mount. My guess is that it takes 2 sets of hands...

One set of hands is all that is needed. Put the transaxle in neutral. Slip the u-joint yoke over the transmission shaft. Spin the shaft by hand to line up the bolt holes on the flange with the coupler on the flywheel and install the bolts. Put the transaxle back in gear and tighten up the bolts. Then cinch down the two pinch bolts on the u-joint yoke (you may have to go back to neutral and spin the shaft around where you can get to the pinch bolts). Done.

I think I see where you were going with this. Yes, it can be done without removing the coupler from the flywheel, but is a royal pain. It's kind of like a logic puzzle on steroids. Honestly, it's not worth the effort unless you've already got the fuel tank out of the way. It's a whole lot easier to just remove the coupler from the flywheel. Put the shaft on, then insert the coupler between the driveshaft and the flywheel and bolt it all up.

Thanks again for the advice - removing the fuel tank was a 5 min job and made it possible to get the drive shaft in - still less than 1/16 clearance - needed dish soap and some persuasion then tightened it into the coupler recess. Really not more than 45 min start to finish - get to know if I need it again! Any ideas on the best brand of bucket forks? I've got a lot of fence to put in and they would be great to pick up poles, fence bales, etc.

Good to hear your back up and running.

I'm personally not impressed with bucket forks... I'm saving my pennies for a set of Artillian pin-on forks for 70A loader.
