Ever Felt Threatened Enough That A Pistol Was Needed?

Scotty, the Dallas PD currently issues P226 Sigs in the 9mm. I have a P229DAK (slightly smaller) that I qualify with, but when I carry, it's almost always my old S&W Chief (5 shot .38 spl). I still prefer revolvers for their simplicity and dependability, although my Sig has never malfunctioned. A 40 cal is probably a good choice for many, but how much are you going to practice and how much more will the 40 cal ammo cost over 9 mm?

Good Afternoon Bird,
Thankyou for your valued input ! You obviously have a bunch more pistol experience than myself !

Funny that you should suggest that, because a close friend that retired from the state police a couple of years ago suggested a S&W revolver,I believe a 38 was one recomendation, never malfuctions and is his weapon of choice ! Thanks for your vote on the revolver !

Hi scotty, I agree with Bird, there's alot to be said for a simple wheel gun.

I love all the high capacity combat grade pistols, but for that once in a lifetime chance of a bump in the night, a quality .38 special revolver may be your best bet.

JB

Good Afternoon JB,
Thanks, Im thinking you guys have made a good suggestion, if I feel the need for a semi auto I can allways buy another pistol ! ;):)

Scotty, my two S&W .38s were both new in 1964. I can't remembr exactly when it was, but I did let our range people re-blue the city issued one once. Otherwise, no repairs and no malfunctions at all. I do clean and lubricate them each time I shoot them.

I don't know what the laws are in your state, but in Texas, if you qualify with a revolver for a CHL, you can only carry a revolver, but if you qualify with a semi-auto, you can then carry either. So that's why I qualify with my Sig.

Now as good as this Sig P229DAK seems to be so far, I certainly do not expect it to last 47 years with no repairs. Of course I won't be around long enough to see for sure.

Hi Scotty----I had not seen any of your posts for awhile and was wondering if you were still frequenting this site.
I enjoy pistols, have three, and like to shoot them (Target practice!) I am fortunate to live in a part of Pa. that is still very rural, crime so far has not become a problem. With my work I travel to farms all over Pa so don't see the seedy side of society either.
Hope you have a relaxing Christmas. (Glad you survived your bar incident, in my younger days I also visited a few of those joints.):)

A few years ago some friends and I, six or seven of us, girlfriends/wives included, were camping at the lake. Its quite a long drive in for around here, like 20 minutes from pavement.

Later in the afternoon we went fishing 200 yards or so from camp. After some time fishing we saw three men, late 20's perhaps, coming towards us. They came over to us saying they were lost, didn't know where their camp site was and wanted to know where OUR camp was. We offered to help but they couldn't tell us their site number, if it was near a bath house, ect. They just kept coming up with a bunch of nonsense that made us uneasy. When they started to be smart a**es we'd had enough.

Several of us were carrying, I had a Glock .40 in a holster with a Velcro strap. All I did was pull my coat aside and undo the Velcro enclosure and that was it. They figured it'd be good to take off walking.

We never could decide if they wanted to rob us, steal from our camp/trucks or if they were just high.

I now open carry my Glock 27 almost everywhere I go.

Scotty I mentioned .38 cal, but I was thinking the larger frame .357's.

They are the same caliber in diameter, but are heavier, as they are designed for the more potent magnums, they of course can chamber the .38's as well.

I have 3 S&W revolvers, 2 .357's and a .38 spl.

They one I would recommend is the model 66 stainless .357 with 4 inch barrel. I think it would make a great all around gun. Accurate enough to hunt with but small enough to use for personal defense. Would not be the choice for everyday concealed carry, but for the nightstand, truck, barn, boat etc

This is not mine but I have the same thing with the rubber grip. Not a light weight gun but very durable. They do make a 2" barrel model that would be more suited to concealed carry, but it's a little jumpy with the shorter barrel and not as accurate.

Good Afternoon DT86,
Merry Christmas !

Only one real question to you, how do you find shooting that Glock with the smaller handle ? My hands arent particullarly large, but I can see that my pinky will have no place to go on the grip !

S&W Model 66 is an excellent gun. Many agencies used them for years. The 4 inch model 19 which is the same gun in a blue finish and also the model 66 with the 2 1/2 inch barrel. Additional advantage is the ability to use .38 ammo in addition to .357 ammo.

Good Afternoon Oleozz,
Yep still here, just not quite as vocal as a few years back ! ;)

I do try to do some reading on some of the more interesting threads a couple times a week !

It looks like youve found a subject that many on this site find interesting, and as many of us middle aged tractor buffs grow older, some are looking for additional protection ! Life doesnt seem quite as safe as it once was , whether that is perceived by the population, along with myself, Im not sure, but its definitely different than the 50's and 60' when I grew up !

Some very good information on here !

Good to see you back. Your tag line was one of the most interesting and memorable things about TBN when I first started reading years ago. Why it was I don't know but it, along with your interesting posts and your friendly, helpful attitude helped welcome me to TBN.
