To many dogs are purposely dropped off in the country by their owners for whatever reason and figure that the country folk will take care of it. Well guess again I've had to send enough of these to another form of celestial existence. As a former MN farm kid from mid Stearns county area, the lake areas were known to have stray dogs packup like wolves and the locals ended up going on "dog hunts" to get rid of these packs. These former pets are not starving, they are in a pack for a purpose and that is to survive. If a pet owner does not care for his animal/s, pet/s or otherwise than this person/s has no business owning any of the aforementioned. To the OP, your particular problem is that you know who owns the dog. It's made clear they don't care what happens to it. I know what we had to do a long time ago with a dog that kept showing up and we knew who owned it. It was not even neglected, came from a farmer a mile away. We used a corn cob (minus the kernels) soaked in terpentine. (Not going to explain what we did) but the dog never came back after what happened to it.

Lets look at what you said

"I know what we had to do a long time ago with a dog that kept showing up and we knew who owned it."

You had to do it? You wanted to do it? Kept showing up is different from a pack of wild dogs.

Maybe you like to hurt animals for sport because they just show up, but dont be proud of it.

It's an animal called a dog.

Sheesh, some in this thread makes you wonder if it is the next coming of a deity.....

Your right this is crazy, shoot the dog what does it matter. My mistake in trying to point out the good qualities of these animals. Could try taking the owner to court for the price of the bullet too.

I agree with adopt if possible, though you stated it was not. Rescue or finding a new owner (with the current owner's (who seems to be a jack*** to me) permission.

As MY $.02, please don't give the dog a bad rap because of it's breed. Yes pit bulls are strong, protective and teritorial. Those traights mean that a properly trained and cared for one will take care of it's family. I speak from experience, I do not have a dog because I work too much to devote the time to one, but if I did I would consider a pit bull or mix. My brother and his wife (my teneants in a duplex we share) came home with a rescued one about 10 years ago. I was very sceptical and a bit pissed as he did not talk to me first! She ended up being, far and above, the BEST DOG I HAVE EVER KNOWN. She lived about 7 years before succomming to Cancer. She was wonderful with all people and animals especially children, UNLESS my brother or myself 'gave a negative vibe' for lack of a better situation. If him or I seemed irritated she looked for the source and scared it off. For example a stranger in the yard (we live in the oppposite of a rural area). Never hurt a soul... Though we were careful. She was a trustworthy as any animal I have known. Any animal can be unpredicatable (as any human can be!). Growing up we always had dogs, cats, horses, somtimes cows. Soi have delt with animals!

Sorry for the long rant I love dogs and really hate to see Pit Bulls put down because of their breed ( I do know that not all are good, but that often the owners fault.

Good luck with your situation sorry I could not offer more advice. Attached a picture of our sweet Kylie.....

Boy...a tough call...

I guess I'd call your county animal control and let them handle it...but you know that's likely to be a death sentence for the dog.
You, adopting the dog...out of the question? That's also a tough one...Pitbulls can be great dogs, but they are very territorial and protective. That has good points and bad points as I'm sure you know.

Or, you can continue taking the dog for a ride back to his irresponsible owner every morning....

I'm glad I'm not in your shoes in this one...I'm not sure what I'd do (but I'd probably lean toward adopting the dog).

Good luck!!

Like the way you think Roy, dog will sleep by the chickens should be of some value.

I would never advocate taking life unless lives are threatened.

The person is being bothered by an animal. It is a dog.

One could try behavior modification on the animal. Make it pleasant to stay with the original owner, make it unpleasant to be around the persons house.

Sounds like an animal is harassing the person. Wonder how it will escalate. Maybe we will see the animal in court?
Too bad for the dog, too bad for everyone involved.

As for good qualities, well, that remains to be seen, because it is an animal. It could go negative also. One never really knows with animals.

We too also live in the country, and over the years we have had numerous strays dropped off by city folk. To take the dog to the city pound you need to be a city resident or pay a fee. Since the dog usually came from a city resident we would go at noon when all the employees were at lunch and simply tie the dog to their gate and leave.

You mean it is legal to shoot a dog in America!?

Here you could go to prison for animal cruelty...

I'd call the local animal shelter and get them to do something.

Some rural areas do not have an animal shelter. The reality is that the dog will have a slim chance of being adopted from a shelter. Most likely the dog will be put down.

I used to work for a UK company that had an office in Florida. The Brits that came to the US to work were shocked at the size of the state. Florida is roughly 2/3s the size of the UK but with 1/3 of the population. Even in the populated eastern parts of the US there are many states with large areas and low populations with few county services. Out west is even more spread out. I just read of a county with 3,000 people. I doubt that county has a shelter.

I think that many, if not most of the states, in the US have annual car inspections.

Later,
Dan

If I was too sarcastic i am sorry, this thread may have gotten to me. You may have not suggested it but it seem others have. I did not read that the animal is harassing this person. What I read is this dogs owner is an a#%#ole, any owner that says to shot the SOB, should not get the dog back.
The only thing i read was the dog was showing up at the door, and was next to the chicken coop. My guess is the dog knows he is not welcome where he currently lives and is trying to move on.
Rescues up north here have traveled hundreds of miles to the south, bringing dogs up north where we do not have a stray problem. Click on the dog rescue and maybe some good things will happen.
I understand that most people do not feel dogs are special but I am not trying to raise it to a deity. Using google was just to show these animals deserve a chance to prove if they are good or bad. Some have shown to be great animals, with amazing history's.
This dog has one strike against it being a pit bull, but my limited experience with pit bulls are the are great dogs. My guess is if this dog was adopted by the poster, he would be a good dog.
If others would rather shoot something before giving it a chance, please rethink why this is a default reaction. Thats all.

I know this post was not to me, but a dog can be a "good dog" and bite. I don't care how devoted some people are to dogs, they are animals and as such can do harm "without malice". Because a dog bites or doesn't, does not make it either "good or bad", it can merely be instinct.

My sons have about a gazillion dogs and I have seen a Bull Mastiff who is the picture of gentleness with my grandchildren snap at others. I almost had to shoot him once when he became aggressive to me for no apparent reason and this dog has never been mistreated.

The simple fact is about any dog will bite under the right situation. The difference between a Cocker Spaniel or Poodle or Mastiff, Pitbull is the amount of damage done if this happens.

I am not going to belittle people who think of their pets as family and expect those who do not to label those who don't as uncaring, callous etc.

No apology needed.

I love animals, have lots of them. Even some big brute dogs.

But to me, they are animals. I treat them with love and respect. But in my head, they are animals. And the trust factor is based on just that.

True, dogs bite and you can get a good dog to bite. So shoot on site. Got it. Your not uncaring or callous.

Would you trust my dogs?

With a pocket full of dog cookies why won't I. Really now, there is a reason dog s have been are found for thousands of years with people. They understand people better than people do. And if you say you under stand people explain the youtube clip.
