Just picked a JD 655 at an auction runs 16 hp with 10 at the pto. Wondering what kind of attachments it will run and just how useful it will be. It was a great deal I couldn't pass up. Came with a 50" deck and does a great job cutting the grass. I want to get a little tiller and thought about a loader but they seem to be more than I paid for the tractor. Any one out there have one that give me some ideas of what it can handle.

Welcome to TBN!!!

Loaders aren't cheap and used ones are hard to find. An aftermarket loader may be your only option though. As you've already found out, you may spend more then you paid for the tractor.

As Roy said, aftermarket loader will be about your only option. Which will be $3-4000 easy with install. Roto tiller $1200

Your local Craigslist might be a source for a tiller...your 655 can handle a 40" to 48" unit, depending on your soil conditions.

I'm going to guess the 655 spent most of it's life as a mowing machine...that's probably what it's most suited for. Like all Deere CUTs, a good little machine and can work hard, but it is a little low on horsepower.

Thanks guys. Yes it spent most of it's days as a mower and that's the main reason I bought it. I needed to replace my old ride on just hoping I could do few other things with it.

You can pick up a nice used tiller for cheap, the loader will be difficult find for a used though and you'll have to get a aftermarket and they can be expensive. Especially if you don't already have hydraulics.

I have a 655 with bar tires and a loader. The tractor is a little low hp for pto work. The tractor has more than enough power to use the loader.
