Thank you all. I knew this was the place to ask. I do work safely and cover up. I have been a Safety Officer and was at one time a member of the Institute of Risk Management (part of my job) so automatically "think safe". I am confident there was no flash burn because I was never facing the point where I was welding, neither was I close enough to feel heat. I know that closed eyes is not a protection that is why I turned away - and still screwed my eyes up! It was the UV I was unsure of and this was no doubt part of the cause. The dust from the other jobs later in the day (combined with sweat running down my face and into my eyes) certainly cannot have helped. All OK now.

uv can actually penetrate the skin a bit too. closed yes at a close distance may not be enough.

arc flash can reflect too.


always time for proper gear.

I had to cut n buzz up a bracket to hold a center-less rim into my tire changer this AM.. o/a to cut, then some 6011 to buzz.

there I was in my house robe, wearing boots, welding jacket and guntlet gloves and auto helmet out at dark thirty am while the dogs were whizzing.

don't like arc burnnnn!!!

One of the problem with "safety guys" is lack of experience. Even the UV light reflected back off the walls will get you. You're not listening:

:shocked: I hope you had pants on:laughing:. I would think a robe would catch fire easily.
