Comparison 5045e vs 4005

So I'm upgrading from an 870, and from what I can tell the 4005 is just overpriced when compared to the size and capacities of the 5045e. The jd site only lists about 3500 difference between them 4wd and loaders. So this should be apples compared to a larger Apple. Both gear, simple tractors, only diff one is turbo. What am I missing besides 28k?

I have to agree with you. I compared them both when I was shopping and came to the same conclusion. It is well worth a few thousand for what you get with the 5045. The only thing is if you keep looking the 5055 is only a little more then the 5065, so the madness may never stop.
I still have not made a purchase, long story, but I would go with the 5045e

The 5045e is certainly more tractor in every way, if it will manuever where you need to go I would choose it over the 4005. The 4005 is only about 500 lbs larger than your 870 so I wouldn't think this would be much of an upgrade.

You need to drive each one. Even though they may be "apple vs bigger apple" they aren't in the same bin. The price difference for what you get with the 5045 is well worth it. Also check out the 5055 and 5065. I ended up with the 5055 because the price difference between the 45 & 55 was so small. BTW - the 50xx tractors all have the same engine and parts, the primary difference is the size of the turbo and some of the options like tire sizes.

The 4005 does have 40 Engine HP (870 had 28, IIRC) and 35 PTO HP (vs. 24 or 25 for the 870).
Powerwise, a pretty good upgrade...
