I am a homeowner and I am looking to buy my first tractor. I know nothing about tractors and I married into a farming family. Ofcourse they have large john Deere tractors and suggest that I buy a smaller one of those but wow the prices I have seen are crazy. I guess the old saying is true if your going to drive something that is the color of money you better have a lot of it. I am looking for a 4x4, 35-40 HP with a loader any suggestions?

Go on the website TractorData.com - information on all makes and models of tractors This site will give you specs and info on most makes and models of tractors. This will aid you also in determining which model will be sufficient to operate the attachments you need and use. Everyone has their own preference. I have a Kubota L4400.:tractor::welcome:

Welcome, bigkat!

Lots of threads here by others going through the same decision jungle that you are about to enter. I went through the same adventure and am very satisfied with where I came out. Use the SEARCH function and get lots of great advice.

My advice would be to list all the tasks that you will need to do on a regular basis and figure out what attachments would be appropriate for those tasks. Tasks that only need to be done on occaision can be hired out or you can rent equipment when they need to be done.

Then figure out what tractor requirements are needed to operate those attachments under your local conditions (soil, weather, etc). Sounds like maybe you've already done this.

Figure out what dealers are close enough to help you and what equipment they carry. Also, take note of any dealers that are not known for satisfied customers.

The good news is there are lots of great machines in the size you are considering!

I just went through this decision process myself and TBN was a HUGE help.

Look to see what dealers are close with good reputations, look at those brands first, but look at EVERYTHING you can.

You might end up looking a little farther out as you learn more. I considered dealers as far away as almost 100 miles. Some TBN guys have ordered from really far guys (there are a couple of awesome dealers that will deliver and STILL be the lowest price!).

Here are a couple of my threads on this topic with tons of good advise I used to make my decision.

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/217034-general-attachments-what-rent-vs.html

I ended up with Kioti, Bobcat (same tractor, different paint), or Mahindra as my final choices due mostly to bang for the buck (I needed biggest, most capable tractor, for lowest price I could find).

Happy Tractor Shopping!
Welcome to TBN!
Be well,
David

I would say best bang for the buck in new tractors now would be the LS Tractors. I priced the R3039 (39hp) and R4041 (41hp) models (with FEL) a few months ago at $15,900 and $17,400. Similar used tractors of other brands are not much less than that around here. The Montana in my signature is a LT450D LS. Great machine!
But check all brands before you buy. Everyone is different!

WELCOME to TBN :)

I moved your thread to the Buying/Pricing/Comparisons Forum.

I can't beat the advice given so far. We have owned/own Ford, Case, John Deere, Massey Ferguson and Kubota. Our last three were Kubotas and we have been very pleased with the performance and our dealer.

In the size mentioned, I really like the Grand L Series.

As others have recommended, look at different brands and models to see which fits you the best and the best dealer. Some will cost more and some will cost less; I try not to get too hung up on cost within reason as it is a long term investment, we have tractors over fifty years old.

When comparing, be sure it is a true apples to apples comparison. There are so many models offered by the manufacturers, unless you are really knowledgeable, you will just have to sit down with some spec sheets and go point by point. I am pretty familiar with Kubota models, but have to do some serious checking on most other brands.

Good luck and don't hesitate to ask questions, I've gotten a lot of good advice here.

Welcome bigkat ,
I looked for about 6 months, first at used and then new. After looking at several of the "major" brands I went with Kioti. Purchase a CK35 HST with Woods backhoe in June 2008. Think you get a very good bang for your buck with them. :)

I own a Kubota as they had the features, dealer, reliability, etcthat i was looking for deere was #2 for me....but for you go green or you will NEVER EVER hear the end of it (besides they are nice tractors). That should be more than reason enough.

1 thing i will tell you an thats not tobe color blind.meaning your set on 1 brand of tractor an theres no backing up.an above match your tractor to the chores youll be doing with it.

THAT is solid advice.

#1 - What are you FOR SURE gonna use it for. Make a list.
#2 - Which tractor (any color) will do THAT LIST BEST.
#3 - BUY THAT tractor

'Nuff said.

Solid advice BigBull338.

I would second Baby Grand's last paragraph about dealer support. In the HP range you are looking at, my opinion is all the major brands have good CUTs. For me a big part of the equation is support that will last the life of the tractor.

I would recommend you consider a Deere 4x20 series tractor, good power range for cat 1 implements, good ground clearance and stability decent loader capacity and the ehydro transmission is great for loader work. I have a 4520 cab tractor I am very satisfied with.

Keep peace in the family and save yourself a lot of grief in the long haul. Take their advice. They probably know what they are talking about. I would say this same thing if they were steering you to a NH, Kubota, etc.

If they have a lot of JD in the family they probably ave a good relationship with a dealer or dealers. That can help in the unlikely event you have a problem with your JD.

And it will avoid issues when you do inevitably have problems with the other brand you buy. :) you know, the 'well, we told you....'

So just relax, get their input and enjoy your new JD!

I would be more inclined to agree if they offered to pay the price differential.

Well today I went to the local john Deere dealership and I'm not sure if I was given a good deal today or not. I went and looked at a jd 4005 with a front end loader. While the salesman and I were talking he realized that this is my first so he decided to turn it into a package deal. He included a 5" cutter, 5" box blade, a 5" scrape blade for front and have it delivered for 25k. Again this is the first tractor I have looked at is it a good deal or do I need to walk away?

I would second Baby Grand's last paragraph about dealer support.

And I would Third that. I live 5 minutes from my dealer and couldn't tell you how may times I've ran over for a stupid $4 part at 11:45 on a Saturday that has saved my weekend from being a waste. It's worth a lot being close by.

Not knowing where you are located it's difficult to say. Prices can differ in areas.

Just for general comp you can check Fosters, they are a big package dealer in Texas. Here's one deal they are advertising for $27,298.

Tractor Package 4105 includes:

4105 Tractor
John Deere 300 CX Loader
Insulated Canopy
6' Box Blade (with scarifiers)
6' Rotary Cutter (with Slip Clutch & Front Shields)
Post Hole Digger (with 9" Auger)
20' Trailer (Brakes, Ramps, Ramp Racks, Diamond Plate* Fenders, Tube Top Rail, Bulldog Hitch)

Foster's Tractor Packages

Just an FYI - it will usually be easier for the people in your area to help with recommendations if they know where you are located. At least generally.
