I'm trying to find some place in my area that sells gravel for the floor in my pole barn. Done some internet and phone book searches and can't find anything. The local nursery's have small quantities but nothing to fill a 25x30 barn. Where do you normally find a place that delivers large quantities. I live in SE Alabama.

Call one of the local concrete companies and ask where they get their gravel from. That's a start... Once you find that out, you can then see if the company will deliver it or if you need to hire an independant to haul it for you.

See you are in the LA area, got a buddy that is around Enterprise and he was recently telling me he had some rip rap delivered to his place. If you can't find anything from the concrete companies let me know and I'll shoot him an email for ya. FYI, I just had ~27 tons (3-axle dump) of 57 delivered to my place in Upper Bama for $380, should give you some idea of what dollar amount you are looking at...

I actually live in Enterprise, Land is in Ozark, so definitely find out where he got it from. I grew up in Wisconsin so never heard of rip rap, what is that? Hope I don't sound like an idiot but also what is 57? How much cubic yards/ft is in a ton of that stuff. So I can get an idea of how much I'd need.

You won't get good pricing from nurseries. If you only need a ton, and the delivery charge is low, it may be a good idea. Otherwise...

Open the phone book/Google and search on Stone and Rock. If you can't find anything, call a company that installs septic systems and ask where they get their stone/drain gravel. Otherwise call a mason and ask where they get their stone. These folks deal wholesale in larger quantity, and can direct you to a decent place.

ps
For a 25 x 30 barn, 4" deep, you will need around 10 yards. For 3/4" crusher run, it is about 1.5T per yard, so you need about 15 tons. This is a typical load for a tandem dump truck, although some places may limit the load to only 12 tons. Finally, don't direct a tandem over a driveway or slab of unknown thickness/strength, as you may end up with another problem.

I get gravel from the local rock quarry. We have several around where I live. When I built my barn I had two dump trucks deliver around 40 ton. The closest quarry which is only about 2 miles from me can carry 20 ton. If I use the other quarry which is around 8 miles away they can only carry 18 ton.

This wont help you much but i will tell you what i do when i need stone. I usually barrow or rent a dump trailer and haul as much as I can in a day before the quarry closes for the day. This way i dont have to pay the delivery fee and can get more stone. I have a quarry about 5 miles north of my place

JD, I have a dump trailer and after hauling several loads I found out the trucking company gets it at wholesale so when they deliver. it ends up costing me the same as if I had hauled all day.

Our local classified ads always have small trucking/construction companies advertising to haul gravel.

I do have a dump trailer but if I need a truckload or more (which I often do), I don't save much my hauling it myself when I count in the time and diesel, wear and tear.

There is a reseller about 10 miles away or two quarries about 40 miles away. Interestingly, Hanson (a British company) has bought up all the quarries in SW Ohio. According to the trucker I use, their prices keep going up the closer the quarries are to a major city.

OTOH, the local concrete plant is owned by Hilltop resources and they bring in their crushed limestone via river barge.
