If you grow your own popcorn, you will be forever spoiled by how stale any store bought popping corn tastes after preparation- microwave, air popped, or other. We use the "enough olive oil on the bottom of a 2qt saucepan" method with 1/3 cup kernels over the stove burner (or woodstove top if it's the right time of year). Butter and salt to taste and you have some good snacking- melts in your mouth.

i use an air poper.. no oil.. plenty of fluff.

if you want butter / salt, and are on the healthy side.. get some simply fit / smart ballance spray ( soy based ) sodium free, fat free, cholesterol free.. yellow colored spray. give it a few sprays, then if ya want the salt hit it with fine grane 'powdered popcorn salt.. or the healthier half and half popcorn salt that also has th salt light ( potassium chloride ).. etc.

My family has popcorn every Sunday night and we watch a movie. Our favorite is to use the Stir Crazy popper as described by the OP. We LOVE popcorn salt. The fine grains stick to the popcorn and taste very good. Of course we use LOTS of butter. One stick per batch of popcorn.

For an extra treat try clarified butter... Let the butter melt in low heat (like on a hot summer's day). The butter will separate into the cloudy stuff and the clear amber stuff. Use the clear amber stuff.

We'll sometimes mix a half a packet of taco seasoning in with our butter before we put it on the popcorn. Or, we'll dust the finished popcorn with cheese powder. I just use the stuff I get from work, but you can find cheese powder in the grocery store near the parmesan cheese. Ranch dressing mix is good too.

I settled on the Presto Power Pop some years ago, and have never looked back. It's a microwave popper that makes great big, fluffy kernels, and I have never burned a kernel using it.

National Presto Industries, Inc.

I use butter and just a little California style garlic salt for seasoning.

For popcorn balls, try the 1-1-1 recipe. Pop 1 cup of corn, mix together 1 cup of warm honey and 1 cup of warm creamy peanut butter, mix, shape into balls and let cool on waxed paper. Grease your fingers before you start shaping the popcorn into balls. You can add a little salt, peanuts, or just use chunky peanut butter if you like.

BTW, due to a short crop, peanut butter will be going up about 30% in price by November. You might want to stock up.

What is calif style garlic salt??? is it some bio friendly, green grown, gender neutral version of garlic salt    :D

It's got some sort of little green veggie flakes in it, I think parsley. I haven't ever paid attention to the ingredients, it just has more garlic than salt. To me, the garlic is the whole point of using garlic salt.

This is the way we do it too. Use the air popper and some Pam spray or any other butter flavored cooking spray. This makes the salt stick. Once the popcorn is in a bowl, spray the surface with a little butter flavored cooking spray, sprink the salt (or any other stuff you sprinkle on popcorn) and stir the bowl. Repeat that process a few times and it tastes just as good as all the other methods and with very little fat.

My theatre style popper demands coconut oil and lots of salt. Hard to beat. Few want to share much of my popcorn after I salt it.

yep, and depending on what you use.. could be virtually no fat.. the smart ballance spray i use is fat free.. and many of those cooking sprays are fat free / callorie free.

that and a lil flavoring can be real healthy.

as we try to avoid salt, we sometimes use the half and half or straight salt substitute, potassium chloride.. however.. while it lowers sodium.. the chloride is still there.. so many times we simply use powdered, un salted garlic.. or for a good zest, a bit of chili powder.

for sweeter kettle korn style, some of the liquified artificial sweetner syrups and a mixing bowl and drip it in while stirring, and then add some cinnamin if you like

between the air pop and low/no cal / fat sprays, and the low/no cal flavorings.. you can come up with a pretty darn low cal snack as the popcorn itself, per cup is very low.. like 15cal etc.

Quite allot of scientific approaches to master the science of popping corn here:D I would love to know how to pop pocorn like that, But for now nothing more scientific then Microwave popcorn the wife and I been using it for a couple years ;) the only science in this is knowing how many minutes to pop it, and this depends on the microwave itsself, but we got that down to the science;) 2 minutes 45 sec.:D ...

Oh you are going to get me in trouble....

Some Technology is simply MAGIC. Our microwave is a Magic Microwave. It has this little button labeled Popcorn. You put the bag in the microwave, push the button labeled Popcorn and POOF, POP, the popcorn is done. The Magic Microwave Popcorn Button figures out when to stop popping regardless of the size and type of the popcorn bag.

Amazing. :thumbsup::D

Or at least it is amazing to me.

Then there is the wifey....

This is where I get in trouble.

Have I mentioned the Magic Microwave Popcorn Button? For some reason it took the wifey awhile to figure out that if one is going to pop Popcorn in the microwave, one should use the Magic Microwave Popcorn Button.....

Now the wifey is very dangerous in the kitchen. The burners have two settings Off and HIGH, at least according to how she always sets them. She has a habit of putting a pot on the burner, turning it on, meaning HIGH, then walking out of the kitchen and forgetting what she has done. I have a delaminated pot as a result. Tis worse when she actually puts food in the pot and walks away......

It is genetic though. Her mother burned down her house by doing the same thing. :confused2:

Not once but TWICE the wifey put bags of popcorn in the microwave, and in spite of the Magic Microwave Popcorn Button, she just dialed in five minutes on high power, and walked away.....

The bag of popcorn caught on fire. :confused2: I walked by the first time and saw the flames as they flickered out as the microwave filled with smoke and smothered the fire. As I opened the microwave to clean up the mess, I patiently explained the Magic Microwave Popcorn Button.

She did it again a week or two later. :confused2::eek:

She no longer does this because our oldest and I have a little game that goes something like this....

Dad to his oldest, "Hey! Look at this button on the mircrowave."

Oldest, "Yeah it says P O P C O R N."

Dad, "What do you thing you should do with that button?

Oldest, "Oh, I do not know. Maybe put in a bag of popcorn and push the P O P C O R N button?"

Dad, "YEAH! I bet that is it. I wonder if it works? Lets try!"

We have several variations and of course it is only said when the wifey can hear.....:laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing:

I do get in trouble for such things but at least there are no longer flames in the microwave....:D:D:D

That I know of......

Later,
Dan.
PS:We have a comfy couch.

For those looking for better-for-you popcorn, try Butterbuds. It's usually in the grocery store in the baking section (with the spices, etc.). It's a spray dried butter powder. It has a lot less fat and lower sodium than using whole butter. The butter flavor is great, though. Using a spray oil to stick the Butterbuds to the popcorn would work great.

Yeah, but I'll bet that if you use enough WD-40 on your popcorn you'll lose a LOT of weight.
