Tractor
Mahindra 2516HST
Hi i've been browsing a while but this is my first post.

My 2516HST decided not to turn over at all this evening. I used it for a couple hours today and when I went to start it back there is absolutely no click of the starter. Lights work, the glows plugs heat up, blinkers and everything seem to be running as supposed to.

Often the starter will click and I have to turn the key off and on a few times to get it the starter going. Wondering if the starter maybe died completely or maybe I have some sort of safety switch not engaging anymore. I looked around the tractor as best I could but I really have no idea where to start looking. I have a degree in electronics but I'm a complete noob with a tractor LOL!

I would take it to the dealer but this is no light machine to winch onto a trailer. Hoping a few trouble shooting tips you may have could get me going again. Remember I'm new and don't exactly know where everything is on this tractor yet.

Thanks

Shooting blind here, but I bet you have a neutral safety switch and probably a safety to make sure your PTO is in the off position to start. Do you have a electrical layout diagram in the back of your operators manual..?? Good luck, Jerry.. :)

Your neutral and pto safety swithches are located right below their handles.

Also make sure you do not have your foot on the hst pedal.

If the starter was clicking it sounds like the voltage was getting through all the saftey switches. Check the solenoid and see if it's functioning ok.

There are 3 saftey switches (4 if you have mid pto) you can try to put a little pressure on the pto lever pushing towards the rear of the tractor on see if it starts, try rocking the hst pedal back and forth.
1) pto or pto's are by the lever near the seat, they are easily adjusted with 2 bolts
2) the clutch switch under the left side of the tractor near trans case
3)the hst pedal switch also under but on the tractor on the right side.

Most of the time its just an adjustment and usually its the pto switch, but i have seen one or two pto and clutch switch that go hit with something and bent the brackets.

You are all so helpful..Thank You.

I stopped by the Mahindra dealer here this morning because it is just not convenient to load it on a trailer when it doesn't start.

He was stating as you guys are. He feels it's a switch of some sort. He mentioned to clean battery terminals and check the ground connections. He feels it's a connection of some sort.

I will look at the PTO switch and the Neutral switch this evening if the weather holds out here. I'm not sure where this solenoid is but yes it was clicking at times before so maybe the switches are OK. I'll check those with a meter tonight. Where is this solenoid and can it be tested?

Thanks Again

I saw this after I posted. I rocked the HST pedal and no go there. I tried messin with the PTO handle (only rear PTO available) but I did not try pulling up with a bit of force. I did hit that handle slightly once before and the tractor didn't start so maybe this switch got knocked a bit.

Thank You for your help. I'll report back if I locate the issue. Gotta be something simple...I hope

For some reason I was thinking this was a 2816, so I missinformed you about the neutral safety switch, as there is none. The safety switch is on the clutch.

Well I got it figured out. Took my meter to the solenoid and saw no voltage going to it when I turned the key so I ruled out the solenoid. I pushed the clutch in and noticed voltage changes when releasing it so I ruled out the switch there and that left one switch and that was the rear pto. I looked at the switch and it was physically broken. Took me a second to get running after that. Looks like Monday I'll be getting a new switch.

Thanks for all your help.

I have a 2815. It has a lever to hold the accelerator in a set position. If that is engaged the starter won't engage either. I just thought I'd throw this out there in case this happens to someone else.

I also have a Mahindra 2516 and the engine doesn't crank when I turn the switch. Just like I didn't even turn the switch at all. Nothing. Where is that switch for the PTO? I think I have the same problem as you.

"...there is absolutely no click of the starter. Lights work, the glows plugs heat up, blinkers and everything seem to be running as supposed to." I've got the same problem with my 2516. Can you describe exactly where those switches are?

The rear pto lever is to your left as you sit on your seat. If you look down in between the lever and your seat in the the crack there you will see a small plunger type switch which is depressed when the lever is all the way up. My switch needed replacing because I could see that it was broken just by looking at it. It could be any of your safety switches though.

Thanks. I'll try to check it in the morning. I need to get that machine running. I'll get back to you when I've been successful.

Thanks, everybody. It was the switch for the rear PTO. But I feel sort of stupid. There was nothing wrong with the switch. I just didn't have the lever all the way where it should have been!
