Been looking at tractors for over a month now mainly online (drove a 30 horse Montana) and it looks like a Yanmar might be a good choice, who does the best refurbishing here in the states, is there more that one dealer who does this?

NW Iowa, some of the shipping quotes have not been too bad from other parts of the country, maybe I am being too picky and should just get the Montana. Seems like the Yanmar has more of a net work of owners and after market parts than a lot of the other imports.

This guy (Wayne, LMTC) in Ohio has retired but he might be able to broker one for you. I would trust him to find a good one from the network of dealers he belongs to.

Or just watch Craigslist, and take along an experienced diesel tractor owner to look over what you find. And always hold a reserve in case you discover what you bought needs something before it is ready for service.

might want to be sure you can get parts for the montana. They no longer make them. They montana was picked up / bought out by farmtrac ? & I think farmtrac has gone under.. might want to check it out.

They no longer make these old yanmars. But, there are parts suppliers for many of them

Don't know if montana is still around. Here's some info

Montana was around after Farmtrac i thought? Who kn ows? I personally would steer from LS, Escort, Montana or any of the Korean tractors that seem to come and go every few years. Manihandra i would not fear, Kioti either. But some of these others that are basically the price of a new Manihandra minus a few grand, i dont think so. What good is a 3 yr warrenty if the company is sold and new owner dont hold up to his end of the deal or they just pack up and leave, like farm trac!

As far as the Yanmars best refurb job i think is a consensus of frederics in Al. But your pretty far from Wayne in Ohio or Al or Ernie on the west coast.

I too if i were you would find a Deisel Wrencher guy and watch craigs list, which may be hard, i dont think they have really penetrated the midwest mush as the east and west coast. Your more likely to find an american yanmar id think?

I like the idea Ernie has in that he buys and sells original low hours machines that haven't been hacked up or the other dealers like Fredericks and Wayne LMTC all have good reps. my .02

Freight is freight its a one time deal get a good one and pay what it costs to get it home that is a area that is negotiable usually thru a broker all it will do is go up always does.

Or find a US spec Yanmar like one guy on here just bought a 3k hrs 336D that is about the size you are looking at and an excellent tractor at reasonable prices.

When I bought my YM2020 I got it from WI and it cost me $600 to have it shipped to NC. I have a good freight hauler so PM me if interested, he is independent and makes runs all over the country mostly hauling military vehicles.

I have heard on here that Waye sells Fredericks tractors? I guess it really dont matter cause unless he does something special for you he no longer sells or repairs Yanmars, he just sells parts. At least thats what some have said as well as me reading his site.

Ernie on the other hand from Ernies imports sells unmolested out of the container Yanmars. May put new seats or paint o hood or something as well as fluid changes but i think that us usually the extent of most of his work as he buys low hour excellent condition tractors, of couse they will cost you!

$600 is a lot of money to haul a $3000 tractor across country. Not sure if that is best decision $ wise, esp in NC when your so close to east cost dealers.

So what model Yanmar would be a good choice in the 40 to 50 HP range, I know I will not have the options that a newer tractor (trans.) but are these smooth shifting with the tranny they have. I was hoping to get a good deal with attchments so I can save some money over one of the other brands. I can get a quote with the attchments so hoping I can same some money and get a good basic tractor. They look like a nice unit. I am talking to a place that reconditions them here in the states. Best tractor .com is the name of the place I am talking to, anyone deal with them before?

UM not much! At least from Yanmar. They mostly are under about 40HP. I think ernie had a huge YM4400 or something? That tractor that Cardoc has in the 40 something Turbo engine is about the largest yanmar that is sold here in the US. There are newer FX series tractors that are not yet 30 years old that may be in that size, but id say 90% of these yanmars are 33HP engines or smaller.

Like clemson said most of the units will be less than 40 hp but dont let that discourage you the way these are geared hp isnt as big a deal as you think. Most 6' pto attachments and some pretty big generators can be run with a 30 something hp tractor.

Weight is more a factor on Yanmars than anything IMHO they are all engine and gears and not much chassis for weight anyway you will probably never run out of power but traction that is lacking.

The powershift is nice and 4wd is real useable and needed like I mentioned about traction. These are the bigger ones 3110D,3220D,3810D,4220D,336D there may be others but that is my knowledge there these are all powershift btw.

A JD 1050 4wd is similar to a 3810D (made by Yanmar for JD ) except its a gear trans not a powershift there may have been an PS option but I am not sure most I have seen are gear trans.

I emailed Besttractor about a 1610D one time and they never replied back if that tells you anything you can use. good luck

Clem you made it sound like I give my tractors a bath, paint their nails, and clean their ears, while I just collect big money.

Our prices are published for all to see here http://ernies.net/Current_Used_Tractors.htm
Nobody is getting rich.

I think you owe us a public apology sir.

oldspark: There may be Yanmars with 40 to 50 HP but I have not seen them in my area. Generally the highest HP I have seen here in Ohio is the 336d and that is around 33 HP gross I think and about 27 at the PTO as I recall. It will do a fair amount of work but not as much as another 45 HP tractor I have.
