I want to pick up a glovebox spare cps for my 7.3psd, and searched and found that the ford number for a 99 ( post mid 97+ ) should be F7TZ-12K073-B however napa online crossref can't cross it. ( -A suffix for pre 97.5.. something about connector material.. )

I've seen mention on a diesel web site that a napa CSS-512 is the correct one.

Then again.. I also see mention of a napa CSS 1103 and a DEMHTS101

anyone got the skinny?

All qualified advise in this neck of the woods says to use the OEM CPS. We run 3 7.3 PSD's at work, all 125K plus miles and each have had only one CPS change using OEM parts. Not sure this is the place to squeeze nickles.

I was actually just grabbing a spare. Mine has the ford 'recall' black cps vs the old grey one. however, I've always heard that the one GUARANTEED thing to leave you on the side of the road in a 7.3psd is that 35$-ish sensor, and that good insurance was to carry a spare in the glove box.

I've seen prices vary from 19$ to 65$ between aftermarket, international, ford, etc.

for a part that's not terribly expensive like that, and WILL leave you stranded ( never had it happen to me ).. I don't mind spending a few bucks for a spare.

I'll double check that ford part number but think I have it correct. suposedly the pre mid 97 ones had different contact material and could cause corrosion if used.. but otherwise are the same cps.. so i'm pretty sure the -B is the one i need on my 99.

thanks

I'm not at all against having a spare, just wanted to pass along the idea of an OEM part. The Navistar idea is a very good one, I'll bet there is a price difference.

yep.. the int. one was the most. I ended up hitting up my local ford dealer and grabbed a glovebox spare. in fact, saved myself some time and picked up a 1$ chinese 10mm wrench, and masking taped it to the box and tossed it into the glove box.. I told the guy at the store it was my roadside emergency PSD repair kit.. :) he kinda chuckled a bit.

thanks

When I had the CPS replaced under Ford's recall I put the old one in my glove box, just in case.

I suppose you know about the ICP leaving you stranded too?

I wouldn't count on that $1 wrench getting the bolt out. They really put it in at the factory with an amazing amount of torque...I'd try to loosen it at home before finding out on the side of the road you can't get it loose.

BTW the connector difference is gold vs tin, I've used both types in my 96 with no problems noted.

i have no doubts about the wrench.. it came from a 'broken' set they pieced out.. I have plenty of identical wrenche sets.

they are made in the same place craftsman are anyway.. just check one.. :) ;)

My 7.3 was /is a1996 and was not covered by Ford. I purchased one from a not to friendly International dealer in Dayton Ohio. With the rusty oil pans it is interesting how these trucks are so ,"prized".

aside from those cps issues. I hear they have a virtually bulletproof reputation..

I also keep the sensor for the rear end in the glovebox. It's real exciting when it goes. First to overdrive in 2 seconds...

My advice is keep the fuel additives in the tank as the fuel around here tear up a truck. 7.3 trucks are like gold around here a 96 srw sold for $18000 at the dealer the other day. And old owner didnt even have it clean out yet. I will admit it looked good.
Sound guy you have a nice fleet of trucks and the new one looks real nice also.
