501 sickle mower

I have been looking for a better mower to mow my hobby and mulching hay. Ive been using an old 5 foot rotary cutter with a hay side in it. PI just bale with my mini round baler and an old JD rake. I was ok with the mower but if it was out of level it would double cut the stems. The deck wa rusted and finally fell in. I m rebuilding it for a feild mower now. I was talking to a friend that can find anything lol. He told me that he sold a nice 501 Ford to a friend I got hi number and called and went to see it.

It had a nearly new blade, no breaks or welds, new belt and a new blade in a box for 100 dollars. I need a female pto shaft end but think theres one in the shed.

Is there anyone here that has any pros or cons of a 501 Ford. I figure if I didnt like it the auction at Moulton a wrecked one will go for 250 i could just Willy nelson it.

Make sure it has both left and right clamps. Ken Sweet

What clamps are these, Im not familiar with a sickle mower This has arms over the lower lift pins. Im using this on a YM 3000 Yanmar

Im missing these, the bad part theres none around here with that part on them kinda sad. I belive I can find those parts. Thanks for the pic Ken.

If you stand behind the mower, looking forward, you cannot run without the left one. That one carries the blade. The right one is your mower stabilizer clamp and you can probably do without that one and take care of the mower sway with the tractor sway limiter chains. If you come up with any extra clamps, I could use a couple also. Ken Sweet

This unit was cutting hay so i probably over looked it. Im going to TAC enterprises sale this comming week Ill look through the parts msc line and can find them probably.

I see that you live in the Gulf South. One huge drawback to a sickle mower of any kind is a fire ant mount. When you hit one, you usually have to back up and clear the mower, sometimes more than once.
Everyone that I know of used to cut with a sickle, (that was all we had) but now they use a disc mower.
