For haywork on hilly terrain using mower-Kuhn accumulator combo, I'm looking at new Massey 6475, Kubota M135X and JD6140 in that order. The 'bota appears the best value for the money by far, but the MF has desirable options that the others don't offer (ie. front 3pt/PTO) and a super beefy front end. Problem is, MF is at a stratospheric price point... a good 20-30% more than the Kubota with equal options. Is this price differential the rule for Masseys? And if so, are they that much better a machine? Thanks.

No, I'm comparing new to new. Granted, the JD is closer in price to MF but neither is near the Kubota.

I do not see how you could go wrong with any of them. Tractors and trucks are much alike. They will do about the same things in a class, one just may be better in your eyes or on paper.

Personally I would go with what has the lowest cost of ownership, not the cheapest price. Look at maintenance items, trade in values, ect. Look at what each bring in a 5 year old unit versus what they cost new.

Kubotas have been really good tractors for me!! I dont really no much about the heavy horse tractors but they should be just as good as the ones I own. but if the front pto and 3pt mite be something you maybe need later on then mite go with that tractor but for that much of a price diff. are your going to get more than you will ever use or get the tractor that will get the job you wont done at a better $$$. All you listed are good brands!!

the Massey seems like the better tractor jsut because it is a 6 cylinder. if you have hilly terrain and hay production of any kind, a 4 cylinder, like in the Deere and Kubota, isnt quit as stout. Have you checked out the New Holland T6030 or T6050, 115hp and 125hp. both 6 cylinders and great tractors.

The MF costs a lot more because its in a different class than the others compared. You're comparing a F-450 lariat diesel to a pair of 3/4 ton base model gassers, for an analogy.

Yup that 6475 is quite a bit bigger than a 135 weight wise, both curb and maximum ballasted, you may want to look at a 6 cyl 5400 series. Also can have front pto and 3 point on them.

I like Kubota's though, good hay tractors. Any of those tractors are up to the task.

Definitely intrigued by the "different class" comment. If true, that would certainly explain some of the price delta. I've looked at the MF 5400 series and after I finish dressing it up, it's up near the 6400 series in cost yet, according to the literature, it's a quieter, more comfortable machine. Dealer wise, both the Kubota (12 miles away) and the MF (two at 31 miles) are helpful and stable. New Holland is not in the mix.

One question for all (especially Duffster, the MF dealer). Taking the manufacturers web site "Build a..." feature which gives you just list prices, can you more or less extrapolate one model's known selling price with another's and be fairly close? Fr'instance, I know a MF dealer in my area is selling a new 5475 for 25% off list. (This includes a "Free Loader" promotion that may not be available on the next class up machine.) Will the ratio still roughly apply on other machines? I know I can simply ask the dealer, but the "Build" feature MF and Kubota has on their sites makes it easy to play with options and is quicker than waiting for call backs.

how much hay are you cutting to utilize this equipment?

all three brands, as well as the newholland,case-IH, magnum tractors are all well buit equipment,

the Massey ferguson tractors are part of the agco brand now just as is the catepillar designed challenger branded tractor, and the Fendt.

the agco company recently released the news that they where going to return production of there large tractors to a location in minnesota, because they where tired of being third in the us market and felt like there was a pedjudice about the tractors being built in other countrys, so it will be welcome news to see them return the assembly lines to north america

it will take a lot of time and hay to pay for a new tractor at any of these price points

my deciding factor would place a great deal of consideration in the servicing dealer that i felt the best with, the one who i felt like would be there in the future to help me with the tractor and any needs it will present.

any tractor is no better than the service behind it,

if there is a new tractor with a 25% mark down on it i would jump all over it if it would do the task i wanted to do.

many tractors as well as any other large ticket items are placed on dealer lots with a what is known as a floor plan finance agreement, the tractor might stay there for a period at zero cost to the stocking dealer, but after a while the unsold unit starts to have the interest kick in and this will start the costing the dealer for it to set on his lot. that is when the bargains kick into gear. so most new tractors will not get this discount untill they have reached the end of there free stay
