2010 Case Farmall 45 CVT
I've done a little research on the CVT transmission, seems as though they are popular with some, not with others. I found a leftover 2010 Farmall 45 with a cab and CVT trans for a good price so I scooped it up. Tractor I'm getting rid of a is a New holland TC45 with a hydro.

I guess my question is- I know there are some adjustments on the CVT trans, does anyone have any advice on the settings? Any other advice you can give me on the tractor? There's just not a lot of info on the web about these, but the price was right so I figured i'd give it a try.

I'm mostly going to be using it for light loader work, bush hogging/finish mowing, general maintenance around the house/farm.

Sadly, the only Boomers with CVT are the 3040, 3045, and 3050 models produced by Shibaura. CNH has severed their relationship with Shibaura for new tractors and has moved to LS as their supplier. Whether CNH owns the CVT and will put it into future models, I don't know. However, the Boomer models seem to be pretty rare from the number of owners on TBN. I'm afraid the Boomers and the Case DXs with the CVT are about to be somewhat orphaned if not completely orphaned. I don't know what CNH's agreement with Shibaura is for engine repair parts and such, but certainly even if CNH owns the CVT, it will be several years before it appears in any other similar sized model. In my opinion, buying that transmission requires a bit of faith and hope. It could easily follow in the Select-O-Speed transmission into a maintenance black hole.

For the money, it was hard to beat, I assumed with a Case name(even thought not built by Case) I wouldn't have to worry much about service if I needed it. It's new so has a lot of warranty. Seems as though they were motivated to get rid of them. Brand new 45HP cab tractor with loader for mid 20's... I thought I stole it.

You absolutely did steal it. That's a great buy, but you have to realize that the reason you got such a great deal is that there are a lot of unknowns in the future of that tractor. You either did really good or maybe really badly, but as long as it works and all is well, I'm on the you-did-good bandwagon.

The CVT trans was put in which years and models of tractors?

If my memory is correct, production on models such as yours was started in mid '09 and lasted until March of this year.

When I bought this tractor they said you couldn't get a HST with a cab in a 2010 model. I'm assuming the CVT was considered superior than HST, which is why CVT replaced HST. I have had several 45 HP Compacts, JD's, New Hollands', etc. I like the New Holland TC45 as well as the Deere and the price is a lot better. I guess if I don't like it i can sell it and buy a HST Case 09 or back.

So who has / will make Case & NH HST tractors?

It appears NH expects 30 to 50 hp models to be supplied by LS. Right now the lines are very confusing with NH selling its existing inventory and introducing new lines.

The CVT project was abandoned due to cost factors involving suppliers and engineering. It was originally concieved as being the superior technology but quickly became an electrical whodunit after a few months. Hence the ceased production on the CVT cab and the Boomer 8N. This also led to the closure of the Dublin, GA plant. It has been said that a small facility in Mexico will inherit the CVT but due to lack of funding and resources...(know how) the equipment and tooling for production still sits in the Dublin plant and awaits a new home as of last week. IMO the CVT will most likely be CNH's (Opps..did we do that?) and it will never be anything more than it already is. I truely hope your unit will give you good service as we did build them with pride right to the bitter end, In fact CIH were the only one we ran at the very end. Good luck with it.

I've had the tractor for a couple of weeks now and I really like it. The transmission works great and you don't feel like your losing power like a hydro. It is definitely a superior transmission. It works great when you need to keep the Rpms up but go slow. Hopefully it's reliable. I hate to see Case go to the LS tractors, seems like they are giving up and selling out on the small HP tractors.

Its all about $ my friend. LS is yet another cheap way of production for big buisness. The HST is a proven driveline most definately. Yeah its a little noisy and can be sluggish, but its reliable. CNH would still be building them if ISM had agreed to cheapen its product, but the Japanese would not give up quality and durability to save a couple cents. Thats what drove CNH to the India based CVT platform. Graziano..(the CVT trans supplier) promised big things, but ultimately could not deliver. Niether side wanted to put better resources in to develop a better overall unit on the CVT and CNH had broken ties with ISM, so it was set to become a disaster. Im just sad it put 200 plus people out of work.:(

Hmm.. I really like the CVT set up, but I am also a realist. Do you think this is a tractor i should try to move before it's out of warranty?

I appreciate all of your posts and help, you're very knowledgable.

Well I can only provide the facts that I am aware of. I wouldnt want to tell anyone how to go about his or her personal buisness. It is just a sad truth that CNH has put a product out there that they may not be able provide solid support for in the comming years. You will have to weigh the pros and cons of the situation I suppose. Yeah you got a really good deal on the unit, but at what price are you willing to pay later on down the road? I can tell you for certain that we had WAY MORE PROBLEMS AND DEFECTS in the short run of the CVT than we ever had in the whole production run of the HST units. Like I said before, the HST is a completely proven product. Its simply reliable. Most all of the compact builders still use a form of HST in at least one of thier models. In fact CNH's former counterpart Shibura, still produces them for domestic sale. The supplier for the CVT has completely ceased production. i am not saying your unit will ever give you any problems, I truely hope that it doesnt, but it is a bit of a gamble knowing the origin of the product and its demise. Its a decision that is strctly up to you my friend. Best of luck with it all.:)
