I have an '87 212,just replaced all the belts, adjusted the variable speed lever, referring to the manual step by step, now it is worse, the variable speed barely works. Do I need to adjust the spring? Or is there a way to tighten the belts? Thanks, any help would be appreciated

Did you use John Deere belts?

Yes, all JD belts, all installed correctly, they work fine it's just the variable speed lever. I was tweaking the tractor, reg. Maintenance, so I went through the manual and found how to adjust the variable speed control. Now doesn't work as well as it did before the adjustment.

Are the variable speed pulleys getting worn. This is one of the signs that the movable center pulley is getting worn and tipping/binding on the center hub. Not sure about the 212 but, on my 112 they are being obsoleted by JD.

A test is to get the belts out of the way and see in the center pulley will rock or tip on the hub. It should slide smoothly back and forth with no tendancy to bind.

Last time I replaced these on my 112 it was around $300 and that was several years ago.

Thanks for the tip, but the pulleys are all in great shape. Like I said earlier, it worked better before I " Adjusted " it

I had the same problem with adjusting them. Following the "book" didn't work. If my feeble memory serves me correctly I had to move the "home" position a couple of notches from the 'book" spec. I don't remember which way though.

Did you just crank the engine over to allow the belts to settle or start the engine? I think you are supposed to turn the engine over a few times.

The adjustment was a PITA and took several attempts to get the full speed range back.

Yes your right, you have to crank the engine over a few times to get the clutch pedal to raise to it's highest point. Then tighten the bolt back down. I'll try what you said, sounds helpful, plus it's something I haven't tried

Adjust the clutch rod and brake rod per the service manual and this should fix your problem.
Good luck,
