All that I can say is thank God for a cab tractor while mowing this afternoon one of the back fields with 88 inch flail I suddenly noticed the sky got black to my horror the tractor was surrounded by bees even though I was inside a cab I was still scared I'm highly allergic not when I was young but somehow as I got older I actually swell up and cannot breathe. Took a quick picture with my cell phone unbelievable, I've never seen honeybees act so aggressive they chased me down the entire field stinging the hydraulic hose lines covers and anything they could stick their stinger into . so for all you new tractor owners who are on the fence of decision look at that picture and imagine your eyes swollen shut take care

My wife 'use to' keep honeybees. She received 5 stings one day and required a fast trip to the emergency room - fast meaning 20 minutes away. Once there she passed out. Blood pressure was nill. They gave her an injection of adrenalin to combat the bee venom. Did the trick. She was also given a prescription for a 'bee kit' consisting of a syringe and a bottle of liquid with instructions to inject quickly upon being stung. As you mention, for those who have developed an allergic reaction to bee stings, swelling of the airway can prove fatal. Might want to chat with your Doc about packing a 'bee kit' in that nice cab of yours.

This is the EpiPen that I referred to above. Lifesaving and readily available.

Good information. I Googled it. Thanks. Is it 'Over The Counter' or script only? I didn't see mention of that. More handy than the stand alone syringe and rubber topped bottle.

EpiPen is just a brand, they do also give the same drug in a bottle form for injection.

@ Radium, If your near the Canandaigua Area of NY send me a PM anytime you come across HoneyBee's, I'll Gladly take them off your hands. Typically... And I use that word because not always... Honeybee's are very unlikely to sting when swarming because they are so engorged with honey for their trip. There could be a number of factors as to why they acted this way. No matter which one, good thing you were in the cab.

i had an employee that had to have the epipen kit with him at all times. he told me it has a 6 month expiration date, and was kinda spendy. His insurance wouldnt cover it, but its a fife saver so it has to be purchased.

It is true they are pricey, and most insurances wont cover them. They also do expire and the drug that is in the Epipen or Bottle (which ever you have) looses its usefulness greatly after the expiration. You also need to get a prescription for either.

ALSO... they make a kids version of the Epipen with less of the drug in it for kids...

I was clearing survey lines with a track loader open station a few years back when a hive of bees attacked from a mosquite tree. I put the machine in high gear reverse and commenced to beating the crap out of myself with my Aggie Ring. After a few short moments I jumped off and ran as fast and far as I could until there was nothing left in me. Fortunently a farmer was driving by and saw the maddness and picked me up with bees still swarming. It was then that I noticed the track loader still moving headed toward I-10. We chased after the loader until it hit one of the only trees in its path and stopped with bees still swarming it. I jumped out and pushed the decellerator to kill the machine and got back in the truck after getting stung another dozen times. We are at this point over 2000' from the hive. The farmer drove me back up to my truck so I could get some water which was over 500' in the other direction of the hive. After 10 minutes of sitting on the tailgate the bees found me again. Funny thing is they never bothered the farmer. The number of stings was in the hundreds all over my head, in my ears, covering my arms and a few down my shirt. I seriously thought death was a possibility, but a bunch of benedryl did the trick and a long night of fever and cold sweats. They were definitely killer bees as an exterminator came out and confirmed. Honey bees in my experience let off after about 50 to 75 feet.

The advantage of the EpiPen is that you don't have to know anything to administer it. You just uncap it and jab it in - it is all automatic. That way a bystander can help out if you can't do it yourself.
