Corn problem?

/ Corn problem? #21
What do you guys use to keep the worms down? I'm growing a few rows for the first time in a long time, and the last time I grew it the coons got all of it. Do you do the oil in the silk thing, or spray with something?

Chuck

I spray the silks with sevein liquid. It works fairly well for me. Late corn is still going to have some worms most likely, but reduced numbers. The sevin dust does work better I think, however dusting each silk is not practical for the amount of corn I usually do. The sprayer is much easier, and I usually hit them a couple times. I know some people do use oil on the silks, but again thats not practical for me. I hate using pesticides, but I hate losing all my late corn even more. In the future some pay attention to particular varieties of corn you are growing. Ive noticed some corn varieties that dont cover the tip of the ear very well are much more subject to worm infestation than a good husk that covers the tip of the ear and then some.

Get a pesticide with ..thrin in its name. or pyrethroids. There first is made from pyrethrums, a plant and is harmless to people and the second is a synthethic of the same type.

My father owns a pest control company, and I have heard of his guys using pyrethrin. I didn't know you could use it on crops, however I never actually read the lablel. HaHa.
