My small patch of corn really looks great. Nice & green & up to chest high by now. My only worry is that I don't see a tassle one. I know I shouldn't covet my neighbors' corn, but almost all the other corn I see around has already tassled & it's not anywhere near the size of mine. It was planted March 27.

Am I just impatient? Silly question.

Same variety of corn? Same growing conditions? Wouldn't worry too much it will get there.

It's a good thing. Your variety is growing tall, quite likely, and if it is great color and strong, the rest will come. Corn that tassels out when short is a sign of poor nutrients/drought.

Take it as a good thing.

Fresh Sweet Corn...that sounds tasty. At least you have been able to plant. My garden is so wet, and rain prediced at least 40% the next 4 out of 5 days it might be August before I can even play in the dirt. :(

I live on a hill so i don't have standing water, we have had 4 nice days of nice weather so I tried to till today and before i even got to the garden spot i was making 12" deep wheel track in the pasture so I turned it around and called it quits!

Man, I wish I had your problem. It has rained here almost everyday, for 5-6 weeks now. My corn is still in the bag, with little hope of even getting planted this year.

As stated, you have no problem, your corn is still growing.

That's exactly the same problem I have. I talked to my town dewelling sister on 5/1. Told me she had her tomatoes planted. Told her it's easy to plant when you don't have to step off the sidewalk!

OK - - I'll sit tight & keep doing what I'm doing. Mostly that is watering. We are in a pretty bad drought here. Over the years, we've averaged ~~50-60 inches/year. Since the end of March, I've gotten a cumulative 1.3 inches. I'm struggling to keep things alive. Corn & other veggies come 1st.

The variety is G-90 - - bicolor & SWEET. Can't wait.

Thanks,

Jack

Once you get past varity height is a function of soil conditions availible nutrients including water. Id say your doing fine. I think healthy corn will grow taller longer as it has more nutrients and feels no need to rush to seed as it is worried about availible water.

Ever ride by those giant corn fields that dont irrigate and see the tiny 3ft corn on the hills and dry spots thats tassled and has little ears on it but in the vally its taller or if in a spot the irrigation hits it its twice the height?

They probably planted earlier varieties. All corn is not created equal. Late maturing varieties have better yields. Lots of people stagger plantings of early and late so they have fresh corn all summer long. Try a row of early and a row of late, followed by three rows of late planted 2 weeks apart. If the weather cooperates, you last row planted will be coming on sweet about the time your first row planted is hardening into pheasant food.

Wait, you're in SE Louisiana and you're in a drought? It may not fall from the sky, but it sure is headin your way. Hope you stay above it.

Well just because there's water in ther river doesn't mean any has come from the clouds over us. The Missipipippi is ~~ 50 miles away from me, & the Atchafalaya is even further. My last rains were May 3 & 13, 0.1" each time.

Larry & all - - thanks. Saw a tassle or two this afternoon. I don't remember them from my rounds this morning. And no, I wasn't so smart to stagger my planting - - my patch is x 30' x 30'. i was afraid I'd have rows unfertilized if I spread it out too much. maybe next year.

I'm going up to check ours out today. I soooo want some fresh sweet corn, but hubby said be patient not enough time has passed from the tasseling yet. Maybe every few years down here we would get some decent sweet corn. This is the first year he has been home to plow that land at our duplex. We have an acre there and only use the front 1/3, we kept the back clean and mowed. The other half of it back there used to be a septic field but that's been long ago, we now have city sewer. We didn't use that part, probably wouldn't hurt, but just the idea. I could raise corn for the chickens on that side and grind it for them. So much of what you get now is just cobs ground up. I've had chicks refuse to eat it.

Here is how mom used to fix corn that was past its prime. When I was growing up we would just go in the field behind us or in front of us and pick corn, we ate plain old field corn, not sure you can do that now. anyway when the corn gets to mature for sweet corn on the cob, cut it off, scrape the cob for milk. Put butter in a skillet and the corn, then start frying it, add some milk, salt, and pepper to taste. You may have to fry it for 20 minutes or so on low, stir it frequently or it will burn. You can taste some and see if its tender enough. We would prolong the corn season that way and it was delicious. Fried corn, can't wait.

Are you guys kidding? It's so wet in the Catskills I'm thinking of growing rice! Our corn isn't even in yet.

Corn looks healthy. I remove the side shoot suckers that form at the bottom of the stalk as much as I can usually(usually lose interest in this in my later plantings). My thinking is that the main stalk would get more energy without the side shoots stealing it and not ever producing an ear. I am not sure if my thinking is really correct on this, but I think ive heard that somewhere before, so I do it. I guess its kind of the same think as pruning a tomato plant, some folks do it and some dont.

What do you guys use to keep the worms down? I'm growing a few rows for the first time in a long time, and the last time I grew it the coons got all of it. Do you do the oil in the silk thing, or spray with something?
