I remember someone here saying the clutch was kept for emergency situations where you hit something and need to quickly stop power to the PTO. That people naturally step on a pedal over pushing a lever or pressing a button.

That could be the case. I am use to operating geared farm tractors with independent PTO in which depressing the clutch doesn't affect the PTO, so I instinctively reach for the PTO and 3-point lift lever as opposed to depressing the clutch.

I just really don't like a clutch on an HST tractor, but can live with it I suppose; have been so far. It may however influence my next purchase.

My situation is unique though and shouldn't be a concern to ant prospective buyers.

We're getting the Quick Attach FEL with the 2 levers for changing out the loader
implements if that's what you mean.

Yep, that's the one.

I engage the PTO by gradually moving the lever forward with the tractor at about 1500 RPM's. At about 1/2 way engaged the PTO begins to turn. Once the implement is rotating, or engaged, I fully engage the PTO lever and then run the tractor RPM's up to the 540 PTO RPM level. For the L3940, it puts the tractor at just above 2600 RPM's. I've pushed her up to at least 2900 RPM's for long durations without any problems. She runs like a Timex: "Takes a lickin and keeps on ticken"! :cool2:

BTW I have used the clutch pedal to quickly disengage the PTO after hitting a big rock with my finish mower. It's nice to be able to kill power to the PTO quickly with the clutch. Just remember to disengage the PTO lever before releasing the clutch (don't ask me why I should remind you of that :ashamed:)

Hi . On my new Massey 1643 HST, to engage the PTO, you depress an arm at our left, than you depress a little button on the dash near the steering wheel and the PTO is engaged, if there is an emergency just touch that button and it stops the PTO. I f you need to start the Pto slowly, there is a second depressing button just beside the PTO button that will start the Pto slowly if needed (like for a mower). No clutch. Have a nice day ,be safe.

Well they called to say it's ready except an overnight leak down test, something
they do with all their Loader tractors. I was about to give up on them, hadn't heard
anything since the first of the week. I did get wind of an L4740HST in Greensboro
that's been setting for over a year and they're wanting to make a deal, I could
get it for about the same money but it lacks some of the newer features and it
has to faded after sitting out for over a year. We thought about going to see it
but my wife's too picky about how her tractors look, that's a good thing though
in my book.

Guess I've been out of this thread for a while, but it looks like you settled on a nice looking tractor there. Congratulations and please enjoy it! By the way, tell your wife there are a few other IH fanatics wandering around who also have orange tractors... including yours truly.
