it has been some time since i looked through codes for IL. but if memory serves farm tags for IL, allows truck to be driving 25 or 50 miles from primary property. and not allowed out of state. or something like that.

for farmers it allows lower registration rate and for 2 years vs 1 year renewal.

other words if you were X distance from your primary address of registration, you could get in trouble. and if ya go in or out of state you could also get in trouble if you have farm tags.

Again. it has been some time. since i looked at registration fees / sticker / plates for farm use. and i think i just passed up the info. and pay the little higher fee and yearly. so if i did get pulled over for something, there would be no hassles.

I would think you would have to be a certain distance from Ky.

As far as I know Kentucky didn't have a distance that farm tags can be used from primary residence. Ky farm tags just have to be used directly related to agricultural purposes nomatter the distance. Illinois is supposed to recognize Ky law and allow residents to come to Illinois as long as they are following guidelines in licensing from that state.

I've heard a MN log truck driver getting nailed by WI patrol for operating with farm tags in WI.

THe Department of Theives here are nit pickingnow. Even pulling out old laws still on the books for starters. I had a friend that went to Illinois to pick up a large planter he bought online. He said it would be cheaper in lost time to have the next one delivered. He had to get his truck marked not for hire and showe a bill of sale to him to prove he was picking up his own planter.

Also they checked him for fuel violations, brakes on the 3rd axle, and load securement.

No didn't find out the hard way but just got word that it's going in. Friend of mine called and said he had a buddy that got a ticket for pulling a horse trailer with farm tags. Said it was another ticket if the trailer had a "living quarters".

I used to drive commercially. ILDOT can be a$$holes for sure. Especially since the state is in such a financial mess, they will be looking to milk revenue from every source available. Best thing to do is steer clear of this dump if you can. If there was any way out of here, I'd be gone!

thinking about it, i have not seen a "weight" station off of highways around here. being open for some time. granted i do not travel near highways all that much. but it has been forever since i have seen one open.

on other hand. i have seen regular pickup trucks and trailers being pulled over a good amount of last couple years. a couple of them i remember, setting there for over 2 hours plus. i think they police were waiting for State police to show up with portable weight station. only reason i caught it, due to going into town to get some parts or like. and coming back and still seeing the police and person still in there vehicles waiting there.

i am not good with Peoria County police, due to a nuisance farmer. can not keep his live stock in, fed, water, and taken care of. and is reason why i went with regular tags vs farm tags. the one time i would end up doing something not farm related, i would most likely do something stupid and not even realize it, till i see the pull over lights.

We bought a 28 ft trailer 4 years ago here in TN for hauling our tractor. No tag is required on the trailer as long as we stay in TN. However, if we pull the trailer out of state we need to get a tag for the trailer.

Not sure how it is now, but used to be IL would allow out of staters that didn't need trailer tags in their home state to go without tags here....up to a certain weight limit.

Are these FARM trailers ? (e.g. hay wagons ?)
I don't know anything SPECIFIC about Illinois, but GENERALLY farm tags are for in State use only, with very few exceptions for State border farms - maybe a few miles, but I wouldn't count on it.
I think if I was THAT close to a State border and had good cause to cross State lines with a farm trailer I would get farm plates from both States.

Make sense ?

I think farm plate abuse is a fair revenue target.

A couple of local examples;
Delivering decorative mulch to suburban homes.
Doing Spring and fall yard clean up - same suburban homes.
Hauling (non-draft) horses to shows.

That has been a general trend.
Maintaining and staffing weigh stations full time is expensive and States appear to have found "better" ways to do it.
Portable (roaming) units that set up on the usual route-around roads are very popular here.
Landscaper trailers with bobcats or mini-ex often ARE overloaded
Those guys know where the full time weigh stations are and avoid them.
They're fair enough "targets" for the "weigh station in a van" - IMO.

This allows trucks to by-pass many weigh stations - signs reading something like "Trucks not receiving automatic signal must pull through weigh station" (approx wording).
There are overhead beams with what look like radio antennas and video cameras on them.

Here in Northern Illinois DOT is getting very tough on truckers lately. Pulling them over and nit picking them to death.

There are two bridges here locally where the weight limit is different going north Vs south on the same bridge. I know of several truckers that have been caught on them.

This info is from my FIL who is a driver and has been for 30+ years. Last fall the DOT would set up camp at a couple of the local grain elevators and ticket trucks that where over weight when they pulled on the elevator scales.

State is broke so you have to steal from some one to make up for the corruption in Springfield.....

I think that what they do is to seal the container, then transmit the weight/cargo to the system. This allows them to skip most of the weigh stations.
