I own that tractor you are talking about. The 3040 with cab. In all I love the tractor except for when I have the front blower going it will use about a gallon every 45 minutes or so. The heater is exceptional for all the glass in the cab and there are no blind spots to speak of.

I have never owed an HST but rented them before and I feel they are a little better tranny, but I will take the New Holland.

Thanks Sumpter, how about this change of direction from forward to back that the non New Holland HST guys are talking about, is this a challenge?

It is a forward/reverse shuttle shift on the left hand column just like the blinker in a car. Yes it isn't as fast as the pedal, but I can go from fwd to rev in about 5 seconds. Does three seconds less really make that big a difference? I am not in that much of a hurry myself.

There was a link to an explanation on the myths of the CTV previously in the thread which makes the CTV sound pretty good, I will have to try both transmissions. The New Holland fellow is much easier to work with then the local MF guy so I have been leaning toward the NH. Five seconds eh?, 12 changes in direction would take a minute then, lol;) thanks for sharing your experience with the tractor. How wide is your front mounted blower?

One thing I did find about the dealer is that they new absolutely nothing about the CVT and they were no help. What I know is what I have learned on my own. One poster on here right after I got it said he had a 3050 and hated it. His dealer was also a Kubota dealer and took the NH back for a Kubota. I would suggest test driving both CVT and HST. Again once I got used to it I do like the CVT.

My blower is a 72" quick connect. Also have the 72" front blade.

I see in your avatar that you have on chains is that because you are running turf tires? My cousin has a Belarus and that is what he does. I have been told that the industrial tires with the FWD will be good enough. What is your opinion?
Thanks

I have industrials. The reason I have chains is that I plow about 5 miles of road and most of that is hills. We live in the mountains and these are old forest service roads. Some grades are 10-15%. We would not be able to get it done without chains.

Sounds pretty nice my brother lives in the states, LA, and would move to Oregon if he could get his wife to go.

My drive is about 600' and pretty level. I can see how the hills would eat up the fuel. Diesel here is $1.09-$1.14 per litre, 3.79 litres to a US gallon so probably a couple of bucks to do my drive if the fuel consumption is comparable. The local guy wants fifty dollars to plough it hence the looking at tractors, lol.

Not much cheaper here. I think diesel was $3.60 in the town I am in and 28 miles away it is $3.40.

No big poisonous spiders in Oregon or snakes that can kill you. Maybe a rattle snake but never seen one.

Nothing personal against your tractor, but for loader work, I have one hand on wheel, one hand on loader controler, and one foot on direction/speed pedal. If I had a 3rd hand, I guess I could operate 'shuttle shifter' too. For the 30 to 50 hp tractor range with FEL work, I think hydro would be preferred. Philip.

Thats okay I like the tractor and I can hit the shifter with my left hand and not take it completely off the wheel.

I grew up(and still do) operating backhoes along with tractors. It doesn't take long for the use of a shuttle for forward/reverse to become second nature doing loader work. Just my opinion, but I wouldn't let that steer me away from a particular tractor. I actually prefer it and don't like HST. Guess that's why they make all varieties. Different strokes for different folks.

Thats what your other leg is for. Knee on the steering wheel. Frees up your hand for the reverser.

Hard to beat HST for loader work. CVT works better for bigger tractors.

I just got a quote on a Boomer 3040 tractor with a factory CAB and was told the cab model only comes with the CTV transmission. Being new to this I would like to know how the two transmissions differ in operation and what are the Pros and Cons. I have an HST transmission on my Cub Cadet but have never owned something with a Constant Velocity Transmission.

Thanks in advance!

the cvt has been used in big tractor for years now. they hold up really good. when NH was testing the cvtr on the compacts they woudl put 5000 hours on a tractor before they even checked the transmission. they are really good and smooth and have many really handy adjustments and settings.

Would you please explain?

I did a quick search and couldn't find an issue pushing heavy loads. What do you mean by breakout?

These transmissions require a little finer touch to adjusting and use. When things are not right they do just stop.

Y'know...at least we'll start seeing some new topics:
"CVT vs. Gear"
"HST vs. CVT"

This should bring an entirely new phase to TBN!

I agree with it not taking long to get use to the shuttle shift as I have also used them on a backhoe and tractors. Our M8540 has hydraulic shuttle shift which really works well in comparison to our old synchro unit, but even though I am use to it, I still prefer the HST. Personally if I have to use a shuttle for forward or reverse, I will just stay with a geared unit.

As you say, different strokes.

My dealer told me today that a hydro trans is old technology and will eventually be phased out. That's why you can't get a hydro with a cab in the 40-50 hp Case/New Holland line.

Is it possible his opinion is influenced by the fact CNH has plowed umpty-million $ into developing a CVT product in that hp range? Nah. Tractor dealers are always totally impartial. But we could look on the bright side... now everyone who likes HST's (including me), can claim to prefer the "tried and true" old fashioned approach instead of all that unproven newfangled stuff. :D
