Shock Collar for Dog training

I have a Sport Dog 1800. Innotech, and Tri-tronics are other brands. You can buy multiple collars for different dogs and use one controller. Plenty of range and mutiple levels of shock. Like others have said, voice command first (I also have them trained to a whistle- 1 blast means pay attention to me/turn, 3-4 consecutive blasts means come all the way back to me and they must come completely back to me), then tone and if they still don't respond, the shock. Since your dogs like to take off running, I would suggest first using a long cord/string tied to the one that like to take off. You need to control him first before trying the tone/shock. Let him run out on the cord a little ways, call him back, if he doesn't listen, then tone/shock. The cord will keep him/her from running off as you begin training.

I understand and thanks........so teach the stop running and come back command FIRST to the younger one?............Using a cord is a good trick.....She tends to run ahead when we are in the RTV so that would be easy to get her to come back and stay close..........

Now, would the neighbor doing his thing with all three and using the command of "go Home" be to much?????????

I know 2 long-time bird dog trainers. They are at opposite ends of the spectrum on using electronic collars - one says they are the greatest thing since sliced bread and the other says a dog that cannot be trained without it is'nt worth owning anyway. Sorry I can't offer specific training info, but I can tell you the fellow that trains the old fashioned way has better trained dogs. But a dog he can't train to suit him does'nt stay at his house long either.

One of the "problems" with e-collars is that they need to be on the dog. The smart dogs learn when the collar is on or off. When they have been trained with the collar they are usually very obedient. But when the collar in not on them they many times go back to the old behavior.

As mentioned those are just a tool and the training is way more than Administering a corrective jolt. Timing is critical. I think you need to allow a time to react to the command before correction, being mindful the command does not mean correction. Keep in mind that a zap is a zap is a zap and not COME, QUIET, STAY, etc. A zap is a firmer version of NO or STOP. As we most often use it with recall, perhaps when they are out of sight it means stop what we are doing and get home, but if so it has evolved to that. On ours there is also a good tone which was part of the training. Application of the good tone is important when a command is obeyed. When we zap for recall, we apply the good tone and verbal praise as soon as in sight and headed the right direction. When I say "zap" I refer to the bad tone which may or may not be followed by a jolt. Hope the above makes sense LOL
As for multiples, I think tone zapping the one dog works because the unzipped dog also hears the tone and reacts.
I suspect you might want to train your dogs with some simple stuff and then figure how to best adapt it to your problem situations. From my reading you may have to apply a series of corrections and you might have to try a variety of steps to get the desired outcome.

Mine listen well when within voice command, it's when they are not in voice range it is necessary for me....

Try a "radio fence". They wear a dedicated collar and if they roam to the boundary they get a warning, then they get shocked. Unlike the buried kind, they cannot just skip past the boundary, they will continue to get shocked. I believe it will shut down after 30 seconds past the boundary, but that is a long time. The transmitter if placed centrally and high should have more than enough coverage for a good roaming area.

You go out with the collar and put up flags or tape to mark the boundary. Then you set the collar to beep only and walk the dogs teaching them the boundary. Not teaching the boundary is cruel and can lead to all sorts of anxiety issues and with multiple dogs they sometimes think one of the others bit them and a fight can ensue... It does help if there is "something" they can visually associate with their boundary.

I recommend setting the intensity to the highest level in the beginning, because to learn they must not be able to violate the boundary. I have a minipin with a real alpha personality and if she was in the mood, she would just ignore the collar up to level 3. Interestingly, after a few jolts on level 4, all she needs to hear now is the beep and she does a 180.

Border Collies are highly intelligent, probably the smarest breed there is. You are not going to outsmart these dogs with a shock collar. That would more likely cause a whole different set of problems.
You have to spend more time with them both individually and as a team. Keep them on a leash when training.
If you have the time this problem is easy to solve.
Next time get a hound dog or a labrador, they are a lot easier, nowhere near as smart.

We have a similar situation. Our dogs stay inside our small fenced in back yard. When my wife takes the dogs out to feed the horses she has to take them across 200 yards of open yard until she gets them inside our 10 acre fenced in pasture. It's amazing how many skunks, raccoons, and deer these dogs have encountered in this 200 yards of open yard. And yep, there they go to parts unknown. Both dogs are fitted with shock collars. First step was going out the gate of our backyard. When she opens the gates both dogs sit. If they run through the gate they get yelled at. Phase one. If they don't stop they get beeped (Shock collars make a beep when they shock. Ours also have a beep/ no shock button. The dogs quickly learn the beep). Phase two. If they still don't stop they get shocked. She makes the dogs take turns going through the gate when called. If the wrong dog comes when called to above process is repeated. It takes very little shocking to train a dog. She very rarely shocks them. Not for use on young pups too little to understand the word "NO" everytime. Don't train them in the open where there is risk. Take tiny steps.

My .02,the way e-colars are used now unlike 10 years ago has changed.
Used to be do wrong get burned,now days becuse collars are better the way they are used is diffrent.
First sit,yes the dog has to allready know sit,they with the collar set as lowest setting untill it just gets the dog to say twitch,turn its head really anything,but there has to be a small change in what the dog was doing,then you push the button(shock) the dog and at the same time tell him to sit and once his(her)butt hits the ground you stop the shock.E-collrs work better if the dogs learn how to turn the shock off,instead of doing some thing wrong then getting burned for it. And the dog will get faster in his OB by learing how to turn the shock off and they do better when the collar is off.There are lots of videos or more than likley a pro in you area that can teach ou the right way to use a collar.
