There are time that I wonder if only suckers work and pay taxes.

Are you still wondering?

We working suckers are going to have to hid some back for ourselves after paying for the others when SS and other retirement sources will be means tested before they are paid out. School teacher, police, fire, etc retires are going to be in a world of hurt as this will happen to them.

There is a simple solution.

1. Help someone who needs help.
2. In exchange for the help, the recipient of any government assistance cannot vote in elections for 2 years.

Everybody wins. Those who need help get it. The politicians lose the ability buy votes by giving out handouts. The people who contribute to society elect the officials. The politicians will then be motivated to put systems in place that hinder the abuses of the assistance.

For any possibility of fixing the system, we must change the incentives so that we reward actions that help people and the community. We need to reward actions that have a long term perspective.

Obed

Obed...That makes total sense so naturally do not expect it to happen since it would be the same crooked politicians you seek to harness that would have to vote to implement it...I sure like the idea though..since it is all about votes and when there are more folks with their hands out than those working the politicians will continue to buy their votes with taxpayers money.

I hope you guys are contacting your local, state and federal officials and expressing your feelings. Why working when you can sit at home and make $400/week. The extension of unemployment benefits passed by the federal government did NOT extend the 99 weeks. I am sure a lot of people are going to be surprised thinking they could coast for another 13 months.

Do not hire these people under the table, because if something happens to them you could be the one going to jail.

A little of topic, but here is some numbers you may find interesting as to how tax dollars are spent. The Virginia county that I live in has about 70,000 people and a $70,000,000/year Social Service budget and at best they aid 8,500 people. $30,000,000 is just in government salaries. We have $2,000,000/year group home that can only help 24 children at one time. A $5,000,000/year nursing home, which cares for 90 people, 90% of the cost is paid by the tax payer. In Virginia a family of 4 can get $668/month in food stamps and free medical and fuel assistance. In my county about $800,000/month is spent in food stamps.

Where is everyone getting the idea that EI is payed by the gov't? I realize the extensions are but EI is paid by the employer (or th employee, depending on how you look at it). I don't consider someone on EI to be "on the dole" like a welfare recipient is.

A friend was visiting his daughter and her phone started making noise. He asked, what is phone doing? Looking at phone, daughter indicates a message was sent to remind daughter to sign up for next period unemployment. So, not only has the work ethic been stymied, but responsability to get the freeies is orchestrated by government.

Make no mistake about it. The employee and employer do pay for insurance. But, guess what? The grovernment takes over from there. Thus, a large part of problem.

By the way, my friend who had daughter get the phone message, he worked for welfare system his whole life. He mentions, welfare folks now only have to apply on line. There no outside case workers. Once computers came into picture, I guess a big layoff down there at the welfare office? Not a chance! Friend spent last few years at work with nothing to
do.

I have no problem with welfare and UE insurance. I just don't like the system being abused. This cheats the folks who need and deserve it. The biggest abuser is the government who lets the crooks get away the abuse.

Just one opinion

Cheers

From Europe today can see the riots coming our way when the party starts to wind down and it will wind down at some point.

In Canada the government took a bunch of money (can't remember the exact amount, but it was several billion) out of the EI fund to pay down the deficit because there was a surplus. It's not doing as well now, but it's not that bad.

We don't get anywhere close to three years worth of benefits though. I don't pay that much attention anymore, since I don't pay in and can't get benefits, but I think in most regions you can draw for less than a year.

What I'd like to see is extended benefits for those willing to go back to school, whether it's university or trades, and some help for people who want to start their own business. That would keep people from having to collect in the future.

I still don't understand Ken's dilemma though. If he's paying more than people are getting in benefits, why wouldn't they take the job?

Because it might only be a little bit more than the unemployment benefits AND THEY HAVE TO WORK FOR IT! Not too hard to figure out. There was a news story that had a manufacturer offering $18 per hour and he would train you to do some C&NC machining. Couldn't get anyone to take the jobs. People factor in gas, child care, taxes, etc, then look at the difference between what they'll take home if they work 40 hours a week or sit home and collect a check. Then they decide if it's worth going to work for that little extra bit of money. Now they extended it to 99 weeks. When do you think most of the people will start looking for a job?? At week 98. The're was a study that found 30% of people found a job within 30 days of unemployment running out. Apparently those knuckleheads that just extended it have no clue as to human nature.............

A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy?
Attributed to Alexander Fraser Tytler, Scottish lawyer and writer, 1770.

I thought the above quote was topical to the current thread! Wonder why if they knew this in 1770, we can't figure it out now????????????

"In my youth I travelled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer. In short, you offered a premium for the encouragement of idleness, and you should not now wonder that it has had its effect in the increase of poverty."

Partial quote from Ben Franklin's essay on the Encouragement of Idleness

Always thought Ben Franklin was a pretty smart guy............ :)
