Do fuel injectors have a life span like spark plugs? Should you just assume they need to be replaced after so many hours?

I would say it is pretty safe to say that most machines still have their original injectors. Injectors or nozzles are not something get replaced as maintenance on CUT's. They can be rebuilt, I have rebuilt many of the screw in type injectors, it involves disassembling the injector and replacing the nozzle, it is pretty straight forward and cheaper than replacing the whole assembly. I have never done the pencil type. I typically replace those if I test the spray pattern and injection pressure and it is not correct. They could also be sent to an injection shop to be rebuilt. They are typically only looked at if there is some type of performance problem that warrants it.

I have seen 6000-8000 hours regularly without needing injector work, but not all make it that far.

It depends allot on the quality of the fuel used. With clean fuel they will last 3-5000 hrs. Injectors are one of those items that are not serviced as often as required. There are many engines damaged because of a poor injectors. Rebuilds are a good cheap option to new as the wear parts are replaced but not the whole unit.
