What the....wide load

   / What the....wide load #71
In the redneck truckers column, I saw one tonight.

It was a 92-97 body style Ford F-350 flatbed. He had an engine hoist strapped down on the back of the bed, and the engine hoist was holding the rear of an S-10 sized pickup truck off the ground as he towed it. The towed pickup looked like it was only attached by the engine hoist.

I love it... Redneck Wrecker. We used a Back Hoe like that once to tow my S-10 Blazer off the road when the transfer case let go and busted the rear drive shaft in half and nearly ripped the T-case from the mounts. We only pulled it 100 yards at most at 3 mph, nothing like the Rednecks you saw.

Thanks for the idea...talk about good timing! My wife just called and said her Pinto was broke down in The Smoke Shop and Discount Liquor parking lot again. I was wondering how I was going to tow it home.....I've broken all my $2.99 Harbor Freight ratchet tie down/ tow straps from previous excursions. I think if I can wedge the back legs of the engine hoist under the trunk lid hinges of my '88 Celebrity I'll be golden!

.....""The towed pickup looked like it was only attached by the engine hoist.""

The F350 guy was certainly an idiot though. You obviously need to tie a 3 foot 2"X4" between the bumpers of the two vehicles so when you stop, the vehicle being towed doesn't run into the back of the tow vehicle....It's common sense people!!! I guess some folks just shouldn't be allowed on the road if they aren't smart enough to think things through!

saw this awesomeness on a fairly busy road. "tow truck" appeared to have a reg and plates(!). the hoist was one of harbor freight's finest

Wouldn't you love to see how the trip went? Good chance he ended up doin' some unintended off roadin' somewhere. Check the 'hills' in the background. Howja like to meet this rig on a two-lane road... coming down the mountain in your direction?

Overall.jpg

She's hitched up and ready to roll! Amazin' how the extra weight smoothes out the ride.
Needed to air up the rear tires a bit ('bout 160 psi).

TailgateTop.jpg

Added some super heavy-duty chain for extra support on the tailgate, (note the 'Heavy-Duty 'S' hooks
to attach the chain). Also paid-up for some BIG Number 5/16 sheet metal screws to attach the Reese
hitch frame to the tailgate (see 'em there? one on each side). Likely two more through the carpet into
the floor pan inside.
Yep, probably overkill, but didn't want the possibility of having an axerdent.

TailgateBottom.jpg

Most of the time was spent on the front porch whittling down that MASSIVE solid pine 4x4 to fit precisely down into the hole in the ball mount receiver.
Note also - The 14'x14' piece of 3/8' plywood on the underside of the tailgate to distribute the load more evenly and beef up that tailgate support.

I wonder how many times I've seen this on here before...:confused2:
