What does Firewood really cost?

Just got me thinking ... add about 300 for the Chainsaw add 100 bucks for the carryall and 100 bucks for the homemade splitter ...and all the other little things.

Darn glad I got the wood stove with the house !!!

You are just in the first phase of wood heat. The second phase will be a larger faster chainsaw $800, pallet forks $500, new faster splitter $1,000. You will have to keep the old chainsaw as back up if you get the saw stuck.

Then comes the diesel truck, dump trailer, more chainsaws.

We do not have the surcharge here, at least with State Farm. Although I am looking at upgrading from a $300 saw to a $700 one.

State Farm builds in a lot of the charges and then discounts them off for multiple reasons. I have all my cars and trucks with them. May ask, If I don't burn wood, will my premium go down any? Ken Sweet

I don't know. They do check that the stove is installed per the manufacturers instructions before the policy is issued.

Ken, I have Farm Bureau now and surprisingly we use a pellet stove and an airtight fireplace insert its only costing me about $3 a month more and that's only because we are so far away from a hydrant.

Its not my auxiliary heating that is costing extra they were fine with those types anyway a free standing may very well be a problem I don't know?

Other areas may very well be different that's for sure though.

My uncle used to say that using firewood to heat. Warmed you twice. One time when you cut it and again when you burn it.
I do not know how you figure how much you saved getting warm cutting the wood. Other than stated already. No need for exercise equipment. :thumbsup:

3 times! When you cut it, haul it from the wood pile to the house and again when you burn it. Unless of course you are one of the 'cheaters' on here that uses their tractor to move it to the house

Sittin up here in my A frame loft at 90 degrees with a smallish fire going in my new Harman top loader............I need to learn how to use it as compared to my old Waterford that I used for 11 years it really PUTS OUT THE HEAT..........It's 36 outside and I just turned on the attic fan to cool this place down........God is sooooo good.......Dennis

So far no one has mentioned two of the best reasons for heating with wood. No sales tax, and being self sufficient! Why support the saudi's if you don't have to?

As an added bonus, I can also cook on my wood stove. We have made plenty a pot of soup or chili with wood heat. Popcorn too! Besides the griddle on the top, it also has a stainless steel meat grill! Nothing beats grilling on a -20 degree January evening in the comfort of your own home. :thumbsup:

Boy times have changed. Growing up in Oregon, and dad working in a lumber mill for 30 years; wood heat was 50% of our heat. Douglas fir was the common wood, but occasionally we would get a permit to go on logging land and get some oak or madrone. Dad was always bringing home wood from the mill and my brother an I had to split it (as needed) and keep the front porch with enough wood for a day at least. You know how hard it was for a 100 lb boy to swing a splitting wedge?
Today, most the mills shut down and even tho there is still logging going on, the availability of firewood is hard to find. Dad and I are always looking for people who need a tree dropped for the firewood (and craft wood). Most of the logging areas are gated now, thanks to idiots who vandalize and dump trash.
Anyway, wood heat is now a standby and shop heat for us.

The woods are full of junk trees that small woodland owners would love to get rid of. The problem is our lawsuit happy culture. I have a friend who runs a small logging operation who decked up a couple acres of Madrone so people could cut it for firewood. One of the bozos he let cut got up on the pile and managed to break his leg. His insurance ended up paying two months wages plus medical for the idiot who broke his own leg. Then the insurance company cancelled his liability policy.

The lesson is, you can't afford to let the general public cut firewood on your land. When small woodland owners do stand conversion, they just kill out the undesirable species and let them rot.

No sales tax, no income tax, no payroll tax, no utility bills, and lots of healthful exercise. When the power goes out, your house is still warm and comfortable.

least here in WV, And don't forget the fun of having that old 4x4 truck in a place most people in there right mine wouldn't wana walk, and making it back out with way to much on, thinking WOW I made it but I will never try that again :confused2:
