What Are The Rules on Christmas Music?

I hate X-mas music as well as X-mas ... its simply not like it was ... too commercialized. The good ole days are truly gone... Store displays before Halloween ???

I like the songs that are about Christ anytime. The winter wonderland songs I prefer in winter.

This is one of those tough call threads, where the moderators sit back and wait for it to explode into a religious debate when the original poster just asked when people start listening to Christmas music. Please tread lightly, folks, or the thread will be closed.

In my opinion there are two separate concepts... When I feel it is appropriate to listen to my own music personally, and when I feel it is appropriate for stores and public places to tread commercially on a traditional holiday. I am in full agreement with others who say stores, radio stations, etc. shouldn't start their hijack of the holiday until at least after Thanksgiving. I'm fine with big sales and huge discounts before that because I'm always a sucker for a bargain, but it's against the rules to call it any kind of Christmas sale.

When I play my own CD's early I'm celebrating. When businesses play music early they're manipulating.

Radio stations can start playing the occasional Christmas song the day after Thanksgiving, and then gradually increase the frequency until Dec. 25th.

Could not have said it better myself!!

"Xmas" is a common abbreviation of the word "Christmas". It is sometimes pronounced /ˈɛksməs/, but it, and variants such as "Xtemass", originated as handwriting abbreviations for the typical pronunciation, /ˈkrɪsməs/. The "-mas" part is from the Latin-derived Old English word for "mass",[1] while the "X" comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Χριστός, translated as "Christ".

I was waiting for someone to bring that up. Aside from any religious aspects of the holiday, I think the history of it is fascinating. I think that's one of the reasons I like listening to the music. When else can you listen to songs written in the 15th century and not have people think you're like some kind of eccentric nut case.

A little Christmas music goes a long way with me, can listen to TSO for a short while. Would choose all day Christmas music to Fox "news" any day all year.
