Tractor
mahindra5530 4x4
i have a 1 row jd 71 planter and a 55 horse 4x4 tractor.so i was thinking why not get a small 18-20 horse tractor nothin fancy just for pulling the planter around or i already have a 450 big bear 4 weeler yall think that would pull the planter.what do yall think?

Depends a lot on how often you'd need to pull the planter with it. Once or twice a year for a while maybe, no problem. I think much more than than will be hard on the clutch and/or drive belts on the ATV. In spite of all the bottom plows, disks, and such implements seen in magazines for ATV's, their drive trains aren't really built to handle much in the way of steady, heavy pulling. I have a Polaris 500 EFI with auto tranny and I wouldn't want to pull heavy loads with it very long or very often. It would do it, but I'd pay for it in the long run with expensive repairs. Not worth it.

I'm with picker on my answer but saying that I have a big Tuffline Disc that I pulled with my old Honda for years, and my Ranger for a couple (that was much better) 40 horses vs. 14 or so. But the disc is really to heavy. But a planter should be easier on the big bear than that big old disc. Just use low gears and don't run it hot. And only a few times a year.

Tractor --200% sure. The ATV will destroy the clutch and transmission possibly the axles and CV joints.

But, why get a 2nd small tractor when you have one already?

i have the tuffline disc i used to use with the 4 weeler but it was to much for it i worked but man would it beat you to pieces i would have to redesign the planter for a ball hitch since its set up for 3 point unless they make somethin that will hook to the weeler i dunno starting to sound like a bunch of jerry rigging lol wish i could find a 18-25 hp tractor seems like the used ones are as much as new ones

that tractors to big for a 1 row planter i think a smaller tractor would give me better control its a 5530 mahindra 4x4 the one i have its like dragging a stick behind a abrams tank

I have a 500 Honda Rancher. It pulls a 1 row 71 planter very easily. I believe it would pull 2 and possible 3. Planters pull easy so long as they are not no till . The issue is the the lift. The 71 needs to be out of the ground on anything but a gradual turn. I purchased a tool carrier for mine. My planter has double disk openers and I would expect the knife type openers to pull somewhat harder. Part of the reason for using my 4 wheeler as opposed to a tractor is; . Access to some out of the way clearings/plots.

Sounds like a one-time thing. I'd rent a small tractor for a day or two and be done with it. Muuuuuuuch cheaper and easier.

Wouldn't it be easier, cheaper and more affective to buy a bigger planter for your 55 hp tractor?

yeah the only problem i have with that is living in south alabama i either have to buy a new 4 row is what id like which is several grand or if i buy one online for a good price the shipping eats me up theres not alot of big farms here most of the planters around here are one row and until the trees are gone which will be next year and the stumps are rotten which will be atleast 2 years all i can really use is a one row and id hate for a new planter set to sit for a couple years with no use i dunno just throwin around some ideas

We have both a ATV (Yamaha Kodiak 400 4X4) and a subcompact tractor (Kubota BX2230). I have never pulled a planter with either one, but I have worked both of them doing things like plowing snow (54" blade on the BX and 50" on the Kodiak) pulling 2 sections of drag, and also a heavy 10" X8' I beam used for quickly leveling off our old gravel driveway at our old shop.

Honestly I have found that they Kodiak will do vertually everything that the BX will do, I actually like to use the Kodiak for plowing and dragging more that the BX. The ATV is more manuverable and in low range is has more than enough power to do anything that I have ever asked for it to do, and i have worked the $&*# out of my Kodiak. Every winter it gets usually 45-50 miles put on plowing snow and being that it is 10 years old now thats 450-500 miles plowing and it still has the original belt!

I would try the ATV and if it doesn't work for you then start looking for a sub compact or older larger frame mower like the JD 400, 420, 430.

Sure like a chance to buy your 71 planter if it is a 2-1/2 tool bar type sonce you have a 3 row model. I would just add it to my present 1 row set up and get twice as much done.

Lucky me; I hope I have attached a picture of a carrier like I use on my 4 wheeler. I purchased this one with the expectation I could use it with other implements such as a row cultivater and field cultivator.
