Kubota BX25
My family is planning on purchasing a tractor. Were were planning on getting a riding lawn mower, but now we're deciding between:

Kubota BX2660 with: FEL, 60" MMM, and R3's. (which we've been planning on getting all along). - or - Kubota BX25 with: FEL, BH, 60" MMM, and R4's.

We are planning on using it to: mow about two acres, clear driveway of snow (with FEL), and any other general tasks. We also have a bamboo problem, so we're thinking we want a backhoe to dig it out (and to remove all the stumps we have accumulated over the years). We're planning to also fill a 4,000 gallon pond and have a garden in the future. So what do you think??? Any advice will be welcome!!!

Tomorrow me and my dad are going out to the dealer to test drive a BX2660.
Neither of us have ever driven a tractor before:ashamed: So what should we expect? Any tips or advice?

I may be way off base here, cause I don't know for sure, but kubota's website doesn't list a MMM for the BX25 and it doesn't list a BH for the BX2360/2660.

The basic tractors are the same however. It just looks the BX25 is the one for the BH and the 2360/2660 are with the MMM. Maybe they they can interchange???? I don't know, but it is something to run by your dealer, how he can get them eqiopped and at what $$$$.

You can get all of the mowers for the BX25. The BH was not a must, but we were thinking about an aftermarket for the BX2660.

Sounds like the start of a plan. In regards to snow removal, you don't say where you are located but if you get a lot of snow, using just an FEL can get tedious. You might want to consider a rear blade, plow or blower dependent on your situation. I have done fine with a rear blade (although ultimately down the road would like a blower) and we get plent of snow here.

Go bigger.

I agree to go bigger.

Check out the new B3300su and the L3700su tractors. They are the economy tractors and dont have as many bells and whistles that drive up the price. Some of them little B's and BX's are still a lot of money for not a lot of tractor. Talking size and price is something you should discuss at the dealership, when you have the opportunity to see the models IN PERSON and be the judge for yourself.

Also, if you do decide to go the BX25 route, kubota lists the 3PH as optional.
Make sure you get it so you can run the various rear implements that are made. Such as the blade for snow removal.

Is the bamboo your only current need for the backhoe? If so, you may be $$$ ahead doing a one-time rental of a compact excavator for a few hundred $ to get it over and done with. That would be quite a savings vs purchasing the backhoe, since the BX25 with backhoe is going to cost, maybe $ 4,000 more than the comparable BX model without it. However, if you expect to have other future uses for the backhoe, you'll save money getting the BX25 vs buying a backhoe at a later date. The add-on backhoes from manufacturers like Woods are comparable to what comes on the BX25, but will probably set you back something upwards of $6,000.

Yes, if we got the backhoe we would use it for other purposes.

I've been to a Kubota dealership before (that how this tractor idea started, long story), and the BX's do seem on the small side. We only have 2 1/2 acres so those larger models are pretty much out of the question.

Sure! We would love to go bigger, but there is that little thing called "the price".;)

With the price difference between your two options (looks like $6,000+), you need to think about it this way:

  • If you spent that extra $6k on more tractor, could you get the BH later?
  • The reason I say that ... I have dug quite a number of stumps. The BH on the BX25 look rather small to me. Not sure it will be up to the task of digging stumps.
  • Do you actually need a MMM or would a 3PH work just as well. You might find a larger tractor with a 3PH (L3450/B3300) could be purchased for the same money as the BX25. (well, within a few $$)

Explain to your dealer exactly what you have in mind for the tractor. Give him a $$ figure he cannot exceed and see what he can do for you. Remember, on qualifying Kubota models, they have 0% financing.

I truly love my BX2660, but if you are set on getting a backhoe, I would go with the BX25 rather than an aftermarket backhoe unless you just can't financially swing it now.

Also, as has been said often on here, "Bigger is not always better, sometimes bigger is just bigger."

We wanted the MMM because we also want to get a leaf vacuum in the future. I think we are pretty much set on the BX series.

Yes, I think we are now leaning toward the BX25 because of the backhoe. We also want to get a thumb for it.

We are also getting 0% financing if that makes any difference. (we want to get the: FEL, MMM, and possibly the BH all in one shot)

If you are set on the sub compact size, you might want to take a look at the Massey GC series. The BH on the Massey is a bit bigger (a little more reach and the bucket is quite a bit deeper). Both the BX and the GC are sub compacts, but the GC is just a smidgen bigger, at least to my eyes when I was buying. Massey has 0% for at least 60 months or a free mower offer.

The thumb (a dealer add on) can be folded up flat to the dipper when not in use.

Keep us up-to-date and let us know what you bring home.

We have 30 acres at one place and 15 at another. a BX(anything) would just be way too small

In fact, we were offered a really good deal on the M59 ... but, I have no way to haul it. :(

Welcome I am in SEPA too my tractor lives elsewhere

I you can spring for the 25 it will do a lot it just takes time
Digging the bamboo shouldn't be an issue
Pond how much time do you have? I'd higher that out or rent a larger machine.

I trenched my well line at my cabin 1/2" dirt and 40" of shale.
Undug the 1000 gallon septic tank and re planted it.
Buried 1200 gallon cistern were septic tank was
I have to admit the original hole was dug with a large track loader but digging it back out with with my 23 with out damaging it (plastic tanks) took some time but it did it.
