:confused:What is a "stump"?:confused2:
The only stumps I know of are uprooted by backhoes & excavators, and pushed over by bulldozers.

On the tractor? or on the mower? "Stump" as in tractor PTO output shaft? "Stump" as in mower transmission input or output shaft? Or "stump" as in mower spindle? Or is there another "stump" I've missed?

I guess. Just out of curiosity, in what part of the world are you located? Your forum profile is basically empty.

Anyway, your question is still far from clear. Is it the mower transmission that you think needs to be replaced? I ask, because on a finish mower usually a belt breaks before any potential damage is fed back as far as the mower transmission. Perhaps if you described what was going on when whatever happened to make you believe you need a new "stump"

i bought it when i bought my tractor from the same local dealer
he said it is a chinese mower and he also sells tillers and box blades
they all seem to be junk in my opinion
there is no marking on the mower telling what brand it is
but when it quit working a few years back i just set it aside
this summer i tore into it to see what was wrong
i could turn the pto shaft and could hear grinding
i pulled the covers and
belts still look new
i turned pto shaft and belts didnt move
long story short i took the cover aff (pumpkin :D)
and see the ring and pinion gear are stripped
pinion is worse
so i figured i could buy a pumpkin maybe cheaper
i didnt know for sure
and before you assume things the pumpkin was filled corectly with oil

I would like to see a picture of this stump or pumpkin. I think it might help in identifying the part.

Since he stated "ring and pinion" (which is a hypoid gear set), that suggests a right angle (90°) drive, and would need to know the ratio, if other than 1:0-1. Also the mounting method. Surplus Center has a lot of those available.

If it is a finish mower, he is probably using the high PTO rpm setting, Some of the gearbox, have a gear ratio from 1 : 1 to 1 : 3, The blades on a finish mower have to spin faster than a bush hog.

that better greg????
Much better, thanks. Sounds like you simply need a 40hp implement gearbox (transmission). If you want to match the existing mounting bolt holes on the mower housing, that narrows down the field. But if you're willing to drill new holes, all you have to match up is the input and output shaft diameters. See GEARBOX 40 HP, SPLINED INPUT SHAFT - Agri Supply

And JJ makes a good point. If/when you get this mower fixed again, make sure you use it with the PTO select lever in the 540 position. If you use 720 or 1000, it won't be long before the thing self-destructs again.
