"Back to the bolt. I don't fault the dealer if the dealer is being charged $6.66 + shipping. I blame Mahindra for not using a standard, readily available bolt in their design. Yes, I understand sometimes higher specs are needed. Not so in this case."

That, Bob, is the $64,000,000 question. If it was in fact a standard bolt to heck with them and buy it out of a bin at your local hardware. Perhaps they figure if you are lazy enough to buy a standard bolt from them they will tag you with a lazy tax. If it was a specially designed bolt, then why?

Back in another life I owned a Porsche. I blew a gearbox and in the process cracked the transmission housing. I almost died when they quoted me the cost of a replacement housing. I figured it was aluminum and I was going to weld it up and remachine it. Then I found out it was MAGNESIUM!!! Why? To get a 25% weight savings over aluminum Porsche sourced a part that cost multiples of what it would have been in aluminum! OK for racing, but way over the line in my book for a street machine. Their engineering philosophy and me parted company. Wish I could say the rationale was as sophisticated for M&M, but I have seen my share of bogus "engineering" on my 4500. It very well may have been........that's the way we've always done it.........who knows. I've worked with many OEMs and engineers, both here and abroad, and if you could be a fly on the wall, you would c**p.

The bolt in question is the bolt that connects the rod assembly to the roll pin on the skid steer tool carrier attachment. This linkage is hand operated and bares zero weight. It provieds pivot action when operating the lever.

Lazy tax has to be the answer b/c there is no other reasonable explanation.

If it is nothing special, why did it need to be a "Shoulder Bolt" TSC and most hardware stores do not carry these. Ken Sweet

The shoulder is req'd for the pivot. EVERY hardware store around here has shoulder bolts by the ton.

Boy, I wish they would stock the metric shoulder bolts around here. We have to buy them from a Industrial Supply house 30 miles away. Ken Sweet

Sometimes it amazes me more cheese is not sold to go along with all this whine.
The dairy farmers could then make a good living

I was buying a bolt for my NH Haybine once and it was a six dollar bolt. It was Grade 8 fine thread. When the parts guy was looking for it I seen they were supplied by Fastenal. I stopped at Fastenal and I could buy 5 for 6 bucks. They probaly got a better price than I could from Fastenal so I would guess their is quite a bit of margin in so called part# bolts. To defend the dealers though they are trying to cover the cost of carring inventory, inventory tracking systems and all of the other overhead associated with running a business. No matter how lean they may be many dealers have a chunk of cash setting on the shelf waiting to help a customer out like you and I. That $10 may help keep that dealer continue in business so when I need other parts or service he will be there. Doesn't seem unreasonable to me when look at the whole picture.

LilRanch, before I bolt this fine thread let me tell you that was a cheesy and sour grapes response if I ever saw one........

I did not know that offshore manufacturers have started using SAE. I wish they would all convert back to the old way of measuring and get rid of this Metric crapola. Ken Sweet
