Flail Mower New Coroni Flail

I just purchased a 6' Caroni flail and a new driveshaft was included with the purchase. I noted there was no slip clutch and did not see any shear bolts readily visible.

Do you use a slip clutch with your Flail? I think the addition of one may require shortning the drave shaft.

A flail mower really doesn't need a slip clutch. Although it works like a tiller (which does need a slip clutch), the hammers are loose and rotate away when anything is hit.

Bush Hog type mowers don't even have slip clutches since the blades are also designed to rotate away when striking an object.

None of my flail mowers have a slip clutch and all of the tillers do have one.

Not to be difficult, but I mounted a slip clutch on a rotary mower because of hitting too many boulders and replacing shear bolts. (Wife wanted to let birds nest and fledge (sp?), but I've never seen them in our pasture grass.)

So the grass grows high and hides the boulder tips when 1st cut happened in July.

This year we cut early (Memorial Day weekend before parades). Only 1 hit and the clutch worked (I exercise it each season to ensure it "slips").

My woods bush hog has a slip clutch on it. I bought it used but it was a factory option.

My Woods Brush Bull came new with a slip clutch.

I think the belts on a flail mower give you slip protection. I have a Caroni finsh mower and that does not have a slip clutch.

to see how I added a slip clutch to get a rototiller attached to my Kubota B7510HST tractor. It's not difficult, but sometimes you run into problems that require work arounds.

BTW: congrats on your new Coroni flail mower. I'm in the market for a 6-ft flail myself.

Congrats!! How many PTO HP is your tractor? How does it handle it? Is their a rule of thumb on PTO HP per foot of flail?

Your flail's belt IS the safety....... like on a finish mower. You could add a slip clutch.......... but its not really needed.
