2185 PTO clutch?

I just now found out I'm in need of a new pto clutch..the wire coming out of the top is brken and its making a bad noise when I first start it up
[if it stays ingaged!] heres my question..has anyone replaced one?? it really dosen't look too hard any help would be great!!!

Depends on the MODEL and how much JUNK you gotta take off to get to the clutch unit...Usually a puller is needed, at least in my expeirience with replaceing the electric clutches...Good Luck!

Well,I'm thinking ...so far the front grill of course but I'm not sure about the muffler or not,its a 1998 2185, there really dosen't seem too much to it
buts thats ALWAYS what gets me in trouble

I don't know your exact set up but I can give you a few general tips on replacing a electric pto clutch. Unplug the electric and remove anything thats in the way for the clutch to slide off the crankshaft. Most are held on by a center bolt with a large washer under it. Remove the bolt and slide the clutch off the shaft taking care to note any spacers behind it or on the shaft, If it is stuck a puller may be required. Clean and inspect the shaft and keyway for wear and buy a new key if its not with the new clutch. Inspect the stop pin for wear this is the pin that goes through a slot in the clutch to keep it from spinning. If it shows a lot of wear replace it because if it breaks off the spinning clutch will rip out some of the wiring harness. Put some anti-sieze compound on the shaft and reassemble. If you clutch has several adusting nuts and springs check the air gap at each adjuster it should be between .015-.020" and all must be the same. Plug in the electric in and do this break in procedure. Start the engine and engage the clutch with out the belt on it for 10 seconds, turn it off for 10 seconds and repeat for 12-15 cycles this burnishes the clutch faces so they wear even. Recheck the air gap and adjust if needed. Reinstall every thing else.

Good info "Machinist"...this is just like my 2176....I wish they'd have put the same design on the 2000 series as the 3186....operates off vacuum....I do not like those electric clutches....haven't had many problems but personally I just would rather have the old type manual ones....

I'm sure I can do this job but then you see the words..dealers only!.. that kinda intimadates me.

They only put that dealer only thing in for liabilty reasons since the procedure calls for running it without some of the guards in place.

Makes me miss the PTO clutch on our old ~1970 JD 110. A linkage actuated arm mashed the PTO sheave over a cone shaped friction disk to liven up the PTO. It was pretty simple to take apart.

All I need is the **** wire going into the clutch!! what is it? about 10" long maybe? dang!!! I wish that thing unplugged from the clutch!!! $$
But its like I told the wife..its the first real money we've put "into" the machine since we paid for it 11 years ago!

I had to replace my PTO last year. The clutch went bad. $300 later just for the part! YIKES!

Is there a trouble shooting guide for this clutch?
Mine stoped working today
Shoud it have power with a test light to both wires going to the clutch?

I just finished tearing my 2184 apart to replace the clutch only to find chewed up belt in the clutch. I cleaned it out after dismantling soldered a new wire on the clutch and It is like new again. If you pull the bolt out of the front after taking off the battery box and front cowl , it is a pretty easy fix.If the clutch is done shop around

I have a cub cadet RZT and my mower shuts down after engaging the PTO. When the PTO is first turned on, the mower is rough sounding and feeling, then the mower shuts off. It sounds a bit like it is choking out or stalling, but a bit different. I am also having to spray starter fluid into the carburetor to get it to crank even though I keep it on a float charger. Frustrated because this started after the last payment made. I wonder how engines seem to know when you pay them off. Can anyone recommend trouble shooting ideas for me to do first.

There should be 12 volts dc between the 2 wires when activated --you have to sit on the tractor and engage the pto to get a reading.
If no voltage check the fuse and also the switch under the seat.
