Not sure what I want for a trailer

the reason I like electric brakes is because if you loose tow vehicle brakes, you can still use the trailer to come to a semi controlled stop.. hard to do with surge brakes.. :(

though I'd take surge brakes over no breaks if I had no other choice..

Agreed. And if you have to traverse steep hills...I mean really steep. Sometimes with gravel, surge breaks don't cooperate. If you get into a position where the truck loses traction, the surge breaks don't help..I've been there. The simple fact that there is no manual control from the truck is what I don't like. Most newer trucks come with a 7 pin connector, and the controllers are plug and play. So why bother with surge breaks?

Also when running on the interstates, semi's can blow you around. A touch on the controller will straighten you right up. Have to "spike" the brakes on a surge set up. I see no upside with them. But then again, just my uneducated opinion.

Personally, I wouldn't take one for free unless I could change it over to controlled brakes.

I agree.. i see no upside as well. I've used the panic button to stop a fishtail when a large wind blew me near off the road once.. surge brakes and I've have been int he ditch facing the wrong way.

surge brakes can be fine when you leave the house then fail 5m downt he road from a leak or seal... at least with electric.. it usually goes til the magnet fails or the brakes wear enough to need repalcing finally.
