I work for the state of Louisiana. Truer than you would imagine. Layoffs happening and more coming. Its the $8 to $15/hr people bearing the brunt. The $35/hr and up people - not so much.

Thanks Aaron. I could not figure out how to do that with this image for some reason.

What I did was to open it in Paint, then click "Save As" and in the drop down box, select PNG as the filetype. Even easier in Win 7. There it appears as a option directly under "Save As"

That picture brings back memories of when we were stationed in Germany. The only things missing are the beer bottles in everyone's hands. Oh, the fellow in the hole would have his sitting near the pile of dirt, within easy reach.
_True story.

I just saw the same thing this morning on the way home from work. IDOT workers replacing a tile on the side of the road. It was a fairly small tile might have been 12' wide by 20" dia. They had 4 dump trucks, 4 pickup trucks, 1 car, 1 backhoe and a large excavator. There were about 12 men standing around in a circle. No wonder the state of Illinois is bankrupt!

Even scarier is the fact that each manager reports to a director that has a secretary and a filing clerk.

Also all are unionized and earn $25/hr with all benefits as well as a guaranteed 90% indexed pension.

Now with market downturns taxes need to be raised as gov't has to top up pension plans.

In my area the government has decided to no longer credit unused sick days at retirement time, as a result 4-5000 provincial employees all opted to retire before the sick day moratorium takes effect.
The average has been 1000/year over the last 5 years.

Lucky they were not inspecting a manhole!
Here they need a truck before and after the site, flagmen as well.
A trained employee with a sniffer to detect gasses in the manhole.
A superviser to oversee this extreemly hazardous operation.
The worker to go down the manhole.
4 vehicles tied up for 1/2 day!

and they all leave at 11:30 as they have to have lunch 'back at the shop'

Once saw 4 vehicles and 5 men take 3 hours to install a stop sign!

I don't want to veer off too much here but it's a little related. One thing that rubs me raw is that around here when crews (may be just contract workers and not actual state employees) get through working for the day and plan on working again the next will leave their "CAUTION", "LEFT LANE CLOSED 1000FT", "MERGE NOW-STATE LAW", or whatever signs up even if no one is around! I drive I-40 in Oklahoma all the time and this happens continually. I can see the need if some part of the highway is still needing to be routed around but that's now the case. Anyone else experience this? JimmyJ, I hope you don't mind the swerve in the road here!?

I think it ought to be against the law to have those signs up when no workers are present. It is "Crying Wolf" and is the exact reason that many people ignore the signs - Which then causes an accident when the signs are truly needed. I'm sure it takes work to put the signs up and down, but you'd think they could put a cover over them, or something, when they are not in use.
