The OP was asking about a product called Quietus. Quietus for Tinnitus Relief | Welcome! Find Tinnitus relief products, as well as other ear health products and information.

Check out the site, if you scroll down you will find sound bites you can play, the one that says "ear ringing sound" fits what I have to a T.

I heard the add on the radio "call now, FREE 30 day supply!" I was all over that only to find you couldn't get the free sample until you payed $150.00 for the first 90 day bottle. Then the 2nd bottle was free. That made me think the didn't have a lot of confidence in their product so I did not buy.
I got home and researched them to see if it works and most comments are that it doesn't. That's too bad, if someone would invent a fix for this I would be all over it.

I have heard the radio ads myself and wondered if it would work. The information you provided here make me guess it is pretty much a scam as so many things are. The old adage "if it sounds too good to be true...."!

I also use the radio to cover over the sound of the "ocean" to go to sleep. I have been very consistent in using hearing protection the last 15 years or so. Damage was done when I was young. When I started in the oil refinery 37 years ago you could barely find hearing protection, now its use is mandatory in all operational areas.

Most all that stuff on the radio is a bunch of bunk.
I've had it in both ears since my junior year in high school,(I'm now 56), sighting in my nice new Winchester 300 mag with open ears........yeah that'll do it. I too sleep with a fan at night. Like others have stated keeping busy helps, but sometimes it is oh so hard to concentrate on certain things, like reading something for needed information,or doing math calculations. Alot of times I'll have to start over for what seems like no apparent reason.
Sometimes I would like others to be able to "hear" what we hear so it's easier for them to understand.

I've had it since I was about 18 due to racing. The good news is that in 1966 it kept me out of Uncle Sam's southeast folly. (1Y).

I just read a recent medical article that stated the "noise" is created by the brain due to the lack of input from the ears. New idea which might lead to a cure.

I'm on my thirtythird year of living with the hiss. I have seen the doctors and been in a controlled study group all of which as you well know, offer no long or short term cure. The Tinnitus started with me after going to bed in perfect health and waking up that next morning with the right half of my face from the center of my chin to the center of my forehead including my ear totally numb. Diagnosis: Bell's Palsy, facial paralysis. With me, it lasted about a month and a half. My right eyelid and eyebrow sagged, the right corner of my mouth sagged and constantly drooled and my speech was slurred.
Like a lot of other posters, I use low to medium background noise (tv or radio) as a masking device. If I stay busy or concentrate on any matter at hand, I don't notice the hiss.

I don't really think it comes and goes as much as I've learned to ignore it at times. Other noises drown it out, but when everything else is quiet is when I notice it the most. Very annoying at times, but I guess I've learned to live with it.

Same for me. I can't recall exactly when I noticed it, must have been 20 or more years ago, but I remember how. Seems there's always something running here at home. AC fan, furnace fan, PC fan all form a constant background noise. Then one day the power went out and there was still a background noise, a ringing in my ears.:(

When I went to see the doctor about the constant ringing in my ears in 1981, he said he could tell I'd had exceptionally good hearing in the past, but too much of those guns with no hearing protection had taken a toll. He was right, but I don't know how he would have been able to tell what kind of hearing I had before. At that time, he said I didn't need hearing aids, but that I would need them someday. He was right again. I've been wearing them since the summer of 1992, I'm on my third pair, and my hearing just continues to get worse.

A lot of individuals that served in the Armed Forces has a problem with ringing in their ears. The Medical Community ignored complaints about "Ringing Sound In Ears" for years. A Doctor friend also advised me of the information in the article below. He advised a lot of people who think they have "Tinnitus" actually have "Meniere's Disease".

What is Meniere's Disease ?

In 1861, the French physician Prosper Ménière described a condition which now bears his name. Meniere's disease is a disorder of the inner ear that causes episodes of vertigo, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear, and fluctuating hearing loss. In Figure 1, the area of the ear affected is the entire labyrinth, which includes both the semicircular canals and the cochlea.

What are the Symptoms of Meniere's Disease?

A typical attack of Meniere's disease is preceded by fullness in one ear. Hearing fluctuation or changes in tinnitus may also precede an attack. A Meniere's episode generally involves severe vertigo (spinning), imbalance, nausea and vomiting. The average attack lasts two to four hours. Following a severe attack, most people find that they are exhausted and must sleep for several hours. There is a large amount of variability in the duration of symptoms. Some people experience brief "shocks," and others have constant unsteadiness. The majority of people with Meniere's disease are over 40 years of age, with equal distribution between males and females.

A particularly disabling symptom is a sudden fall that may occur without warning. These are called otolithic crisis of Tumarkin, from the original description of Tumarkin (1936). These are attributed to sudden mechanical deformation of the otolith organs (utricle and saccule), causing a sudden activation of vestibular reflexes. Patients suddenly feel that they are tilted or falling (although they may be straight), and bring about much of the rapid repositioning themselves. This is a very disabling symptom as it occurs without warning and can result in severe injury. Often destructive treatment (for example labyrinthectomy or vestibular nerve section) is the only way to manage this problem. See here for more information about drop attacks.

Meniere's episodes may occur in clusters; that is, several attacks may occur within a short period of time. However, years may pass between episodes. Between the acute attacks, most people are free of symptoms or note mild imbalance and tinnitus.

Aspirin, and certain otc products that contain aspirin salicylates, or things that are are metabolized the same way as aspirin, can cause and contribute to tinnitus in some individuals. Many of these products are not well know as causing tinnitus.

Items I know of are Pepto Bismol, most antacid tablets like Titralac, certain toothpastes, (usually sensitive types), Kaopectate, Prilosac and Pepcid, Prescription meds include: Paxil, Lipitor, & Zyrtec.

That's all great info. Yes, I was directly referring to the adds being ran on some national talk radio shows.

Unfortunately, It seems that, as I expected - it's all a bunch of snake oil.

In my previous mariage, we slept with nothing running at night. I had a lot of sleepless nights (not all due to the ringing in my ears... many due to the ring on her finger - but that's a different story). Since meeting my current wife 10 years ago, I haven't had a problem sleeping. But - she ALWAYS has a fan running in our room. Guess I never put 2 & 2 together until hearing how many of you sleep with the fan on to make the ringing go away.

thank you all.

Sorry, but I'm confused. Is this a list of things that make it worse or better?

I daily take a low-dose aspirin & Zyrtec.

thanks again

Sitting here watching the game and the listening to the dull ringing as well.... I have had mine for sometime but just really started to notice it within the last year or so. Seems like if I can stay busy it is not as noticable but as soon as it is quiet I really notice it. I think mine came from 14 years in a machine shop.

Ray66 - thank you. That is a great list. I'll be reading that thoroughly.

Count me in as well. "High Frequency Buzzing" on the web site. Too many days with macinery and saws combined with too many nights with amplifiers I'd guess.

Greg,
Page back up to my previous post and visit the "QUIETUS" web site. They have a bunch of sounds bites that will let others know what you are experiencing. I let my wife and son listen to what I hear and they were astounded..."That would drive me nuts!" If they only knew!

Guess I'm a member of this club too. Way too many years of shooting with no hearing protection then playing my guitar through a Vox stack while drinking Sambuca. The worst is when there's no noise at all. The ringing is so loud it actually hurts. I always have to have something in the background running. Believe it or not, even driving with the windows open hurts. Wind noise is a lot louder than you might think. Try this, with the windows down, put the radio at a comfortable level. Now, roll the windows up and see how loud the radio is. You would swear someone turned it up.

While the product is snake oil (too bad), that's a great site to explain to others what we're hearing. High Frequency Buzzing is what I am experiencing all the time.

I guess a lot of us have this problem. Lyme disease is the cause of my hearing loss and tinnitus, I am scheduled to visit the Hershey Medical Center and recieve prednisone shots in my ears mid February. The prednisone is injected into the middle ear, helps some folks and others not.

Ridgewalker -- Thanks for the link to the Quietus web site, I checked and the sound byte for "High Frequency Humming" matched the sound I hear perfectly. Interestingly when I clicked on that one sound byte I didn't hear anything because it matched the sound I hear all the time but what I hear is much louder than that sound byte. Only after turning up the volume on the "High Frequency Humming" sound byte to a level higher than what is in my head was I able to hear that it matched perfectly.

There are times that I don't notice the noise and that is partly due to being distracted by what ever I'm doing at the time or by other noises that dominate at the time. The other factor is that the noise level does vary for what ever reasons I don't know. The only thing that I know that has an affect with me is Monosodium Glutamate. If I eat anything with MSG it really cranks up the volume to where I'm not able to ignore it.
