I'm posting this here, because I bet I'm not the only one who's been around too many tractors, machine shops & guns without hearing protection while growing up.

Has anyone had any success in treating their tinnitus?

I was told Ginko Baloba works, it may for some but it hasn't for me.

If you are having trouble sleeping with it, I believe that there is a machine which generates a background tinnitus canceler. It plugs into the wall outlet. Sorry to hear you have it. It's suppose to be a bear to live with. A friend who worked in a sheetmetal shop for decades has it.

I'm not having trouble sleeping (yet). I've been living with it for a couple years, but it is getting worse. A year ago, I finally got religious about hearing protection.

However, I've been hearing commercials about an over-the-counter med. Then I saw that apperently, there is some med-free treatment. Don't ask me what the treatment is, it's in a book that you have to buy. That got me thinking that I bet there are probably a lot of people on this site who have tried just about everything.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I have it and my Dr says there is no cure or anything to help. I found that having the TV on really helps. Now I can't sleep without the TV. Probably any noise will work as long as it cancells out the ringing.

I've had it since 1968 as a consequence of a lot of gunfire (quess where). I've been much better about hearing protection and avoiding loud music (that's the easy part). Mine has not gotten worse but there are times when that one note serenade gets a bit old. I've been evaluated at the University of Michigan Hospital with no specific recommendation. I've just lived with it and expect to continue to do so.

I went to sleep one evening twelve years ago with perfect hearing and woke up the next morning mostly deaf in the left ear except for the constant sound of an air leak. I puked for the next 36 hours (too much information) due to vertigo and I could not climb a ladder for the next several weeks. I adjusted to that and actually gained back some (very little) of my hearing, but the air leak continues. The Doc says growing old ain't for sissies and to live with it.

Don't know if what I have from time to time is the same thing, but if I lack sleep I will get that 'ringing' or hissing as well.

Maybe it is always there and only worse, or more obvious, when tired.

Also if I concentrate I hear it but generally when busy I don't realize it exists.

About 20 years ago my tinnitus started. I went to the ear doctor, then audiologist, then had an MRI looking for an acoustic neuroma (benign tumor in your head that can cause this).

I comes and goes, and I think I kind of outgrew it as it seldom happens anymore. When my ear is ringing I can't hear out of that ear much at all, but then the sound eventually comes back the ringing goes away.

We sleep with an electric fan 12 months out of the year, its helps with the noise.

I too have it and at times it is severe, almost like a million crickets in the room with me. As did Opti-Mist, excessive exposure to gunfire and munitions did me in; I was Infantry and eventually blown up by a grenade. There is no cure, there are "snake doctors remedies" but no cure. There's even a hearing aid that can be programmed to mask the tinnitus. The VA doesn't recognize any of these as cures.

Some medications, like heavy dosage Ibuprofin (600 mg on up) can heightnen the effects. I learned how to live with it by staying very active, but yeah, some nights are really bad, sleepless as I wait for the crickets to go to sleep and the ringing to cease fire.

Opti-Mist--you do know that tinnitus is a compensable Service-Connected VA disability at 10%, don't you. If you were an 11B or other MOS around a lot of gunfire, it's a slamdunk.

You will notice it more when rain is around , my personal belief is that the electrons being buffeted around by the rain drops creates some type of radio wave that you pick up in your head . My Tinnitus does not come from my ears , I have studied it and I believe it is the Auditory nerve being stimulated , I don't think it is actually a noise . Mine gets quite annoying at times but I find if I adjust my neck it will go away . I roll up a foam cushion and hold it down with my neck , I then hold down my forehead with my hand and as the cushion is trying to expand I give my head a quick turn . It works every time , looking out the back of the tractor all day does it to me . The devices on the market are junk , the only one that seems to work is the one that plays the sound of rain through the head phones but I think that would get old real quick .

I have luck with fan noise when I'm on the road and sleeping at a hotel. At home I sleep with a radio on softly. You will go nuts if you can't learn to live with it.

I have a very mild case of it, and I find that booze makes it worse. I suspect it's the dehydrating effect of the alcohol.

By the way, I'm consuming whiskey as I write this. :D

Buck up Nancy.

If the ringing in your ears is the biggest problem you've got. be grateful.

Had it all my life.

For those that get tinnitus that comes and goes, it can be a sign of TMJ especially if changing your behavior (position or what you are doing) can start it or stop it gradually. If i hear it, i know if i do not do something different, i will get a headache.

Had severe headaches all the time until I realized this. The position of my head/neck, chewing tough things, etc would set it off. Paying attention has eliminated 80% of the headaches and tinnitus. Up until then, i thought everyone got tinnitus a few times per day.

I think 1981 was when I first saw a doctor about mine. I don't really think it comes and goes as much as I've learned to ignore it at times. Other noises drown it out, but when everything else is quiet is when I notice it the most. Very annoying at times, but I guess I've learned to live with it.

How wide spread is this Tinnitus ?

Over here in Europe it doesnt have a name... my father just has ringing ears when he has been to busy... When stuff gets a name, either suddenly everyone has it, or everyone who has it, suddenly speaks up ??

A few weeks ago i read in a paper about diseases that we have in Holland but are unknown in England. Or diseases from the USA that arent known in Europe.
Many symptoms will be put under a different diagnosis in different parts of the worlds, was the conclusion of the article.

I have had it for years, it's worse in my right ear, I was told that's because I am a lefty the right ear was more exposed to gunfire. I am also guilty of cranking up the stereo in my 70 Chevelle back in the day. Add to that all the machinery I work around and I have a pretty bad case.

The OP was asking about a product called Quietus. Quietus for Tinnitus Relief | Welcome! Find Tinnitus relief products, as well as other ear health products and information.

Check out the site, if you scroll down you will find sound bites you can play, the one that says "ear ringing sound" fits what I have to a T.

I heard the add on the radio "call now, FREE 30 day supply!" I was all over that only to find you couldn't get the free sample until you payed $150.00 for the first 90 day bottle. Then the 2nd bottle was free. That made me think they didn't have a lot of confidence in their product so I did not buy.
I got home and researched them to see if it works and most comments are that it doesn't. That's too bad, if someone would invent a fix for this I would be all over it.

I sleep with a fan running every night...that helps some. How widespread is it? Almost every guy I know has it too some degree, but then I hang around with a gun shooting, rock n roll listening, machinery operating crowd most of the time.

Cocre, What you are describing is meniere's disease. Here's a link to Wikipedia on it. You should go see a specialist asap. My wife has this too. They can treat it in some cases and others not.

I looked up Menieres in the Dutch Wiki and emailed the link to my mother. My father has the same problems, ear buzzing in combination with vertigo.
Thanks, this might be helpful :)
