I hope I am not out of line here asking about the JD Gators on the tractor site but was hoping the JD users could help me out. My 23 year old ATV I believe is on its last legs. I am getting older and am considering a Utility Vehicle like the Gator. I have hills and sometimes snow. Tell me what Gator would be best, 6x4, 4x4, 4x2 etc? Also reliability, prices and locations for good used ones near Ohio. Thanks

I have a 4x2 gator, and it has been a faithful companion and worker for 10 years. I cease to be amazed at its ruggedness, and ability to get around on hills as well as in the woods. I also had a Buck ATV, that had more power and would go faster. After a couple years, I decided it didn't do more than the gator, so sold the ATV. Much easier to move onto and off of the gator, and its stability can't be beat. IMO

What is best? All depends on your uses.

If I were to buy today, I would seriously look at the HPX.

And to add, the grandkids really like the gator. And I don't worry about them being able to handle it and going too fast (they still have rules to follow, or they don't use it). Some driving it as young as 9 yrs old with training and supervision as needed.

Look down in the ATV/UTV forum...

I've owned a 6x4 gator now for 3 years and it works well for our horse farm. Our pastures are very hilly and the gator has no problem climbing them and feels very stable. As far as snow however, the front end is very light as all the weight is over the back tires, which makes it very unresponsive to steer in more than 2" of snow. It will plow fine straight ahead but you almost need to sit on the front end to get the tires to grip on the white stuff. The XUV would be a better choice if you get a fair amount of snow.

I've had a 6x4 Gator for a little over the past 6 years and it's been great. I've only racked up about 105 hrs, but it's done everything I've asked of it. I had bought an ATV in 06', but sold it in the late summer of 09' because I just never used it. The Gator is a more practical vehicle, with a lot more uses. If I was to buy a new one today, and I could afford it, I would look into getting at least an HPX model Gator, but more than likely an XUV model. They have much smoother suspension systems, as well as roll bars for safety. Check out the UTV/ATV forums on this site, you'll find lots of good threads to read.

I had a 2005 Gator HPX 4X4. It was a good machine, but one issue was that it really was a 3 wheel drive in the mud and it was not fuel injected. In cold weather it took a while to run right.

I would consider another HPX if it was FI and you might consider a XUV.

I ditched my HPX and went with a Polaris Ranger Crew. JD is behind the times in the market.

I went thru this same dilemma 2 yrs ago. Best advice is to test drive all that you are interested in before buying. I also wound up with the Polaris Ranger XP after test driving most of the other machines. It's been a great UTV thus far.

I bought a diesel 2009 XUV a few months ago and really like it. I've got about 15 hrs on it now. Like other toys (oops, I mean, "necessary tools") that I've purchased, I don't know how I've gotten by without one. The XUV is "true" four wheel drive with a differential lock. Although I haven't had it in any really deep, nasty mud yet, it has performed well in the snow with the factory tires.

I haven't had any problems whatsoever with starting in cold weather. So far, I've started it without any problems in temperatures as low as 3 degrees. In fact, it starts easier than my 4520 and my Kubota B7610.

You might want to wait until the late-2010 models come out. The "new" XUV is supposed to have a higher top speed, new bed, new front plastic, more gauges (temp, tach, & speedo), and some other goodies. I decided not to wait because of the financing and because of the $500 rebate they were offering to customers who purchased a tractor within the last year. Besides, I really don't need to go faster than 30 MPH in a machine like the Gator! I've got other toys ( I mean, "tools") to do that.

I've put over 1300 hours on my '05 6X4 (gas) and it's never missed a beat. It's used every day for feeding, etc.

I have a 2010 gator XUV 620i EFI. At christmas we had a 21 inch snow, the gator was pushing snow with it's undercarriage making a trail through the deep snow. It even almost submerged in some gulley-drifts and just kept on going. Since then the temperature has dropped to O* and it starts on the first turn. Best off road vehicle I have ever owned.
