I didn't think to ask the people there, but is hydraulic fluid considered to be the same as engine/automotive oil  There's only two containers at the recycle centers and one is labeled engine/automotive oil and the other is cooking oil. I went ahead and dumped it into the engine assuming that's what it would be

old question.

1. Any recycler (auto parts house) will take it.

2. It's a good accelerant when burning brush.

3. A lot of farmers dump it in their fuel. No kidding.

It's definitely inedible so it doesn't belong in the 'cooking oil' container.

And it is nearly the same thing as motor oil. That's what it belongs with, if those are your choices.

I would like to hear how people prep old hydraulic fluid before adding it to fuel. Is it sufficient to let it settle for a while then run it through the sort of fuel filter you see on a fuel caddy? Maybe run it through several times? Hmmm. One of those filters could be rigged to the tractor hydraulics to do the cleaning just by idling the tractor, then eventually divert the filter output into a jug instead of back to the sump!

And a related question: how often does it really need to be replaced?

If it is bad enough to be thrown away maybe it is good enough to pour a 1/4 cup one the kindling to start a fire?

California, what sort of filter are you talking about? Richard

Thanks for the feedback, and definitely will take using a little as brush burning accelerant into consideration next time. As for using it for fuel? Even with the high cost of diesel, I paid too much for my tractor to be willing to try, but good luck to those that want to.

My brother in law has a machine shop with a big wood burning stove for winter heat. He has a drip line running into it which is how he burns waste oil. He also burns my old SUDT so if you want to bring it to Ky, he'll appreciate it.

When my HST fluid is taken in to recycle they put it in with the used motor oil. The last two times were 40 gallons each trip! There is a major recycling center in our town so I was able to watch were the oil was poured.

Since the engine oil is usually changed at the same time as the hydraulic fluid they can be combined in the same container if that is convienient.

My dealer - Hoober's - takes it and they burn it to heat there shops.

I usually recycle mine at the dump (recycling center) with engine oil (it's basically the same).

However, after reading on here about how great it works to treat trailer deck boards, I tried it when I replace my 18' trailer with new hemlock boards. It worked great! I used about 5 gals. I plan on treating my little 10' trailer next.
