Thanks for the pictures, I went out to the barn to look at mine (4310) and there are no markings on the underside of the hood like your pictures show.
Maybe mine can't be switched over.

Hi kennyd: It looks like the exhaust exits out the side panel on the 4310. I have been considering putting a vertical straight pipe on my 4300 but it would have to exit via the side panel or I wouldn't be able to raise the hood.

Not 100% sure on the 43xx machines, but the newer ones for the 3x20 series that exit through the hood the "stack" just lift's off to allow the hood to open.

Yep. The 4x20 is the same as 3x20, ie, up thru the top of the hood, but the hole position to drill is slightly different between the two as marked on the underside of the hood.

Just curious to know if anyone has vertical exhaust on their 4x20 series tractors. Just got my 4520 delivered and I normally like the smell of diesel exhaust but after a couple of hours in the seat my eyes say they have had enough of the fumes. Wonder if vertical exhaust would solve the problem? If anyone has vert. exhaust did your tractor come that way or did you retro-fit it?
Thank you and have a great evening!
Jim

The diesel fume problem is history, just finished installing the vertical exhaust kit then used it for a couple of hours moving mulch. Fume problem is non- existant. Does anyone know why JD would not run the exhaust out the rear of the tractor?

Hope everyone has a great evening!

On cab tractors the fresh air intake is above the rear window, so I am guessing they want as much separation as possible. My 820 OS does have rear exhaust though.

Could be due to an increased chance of fire during the dry summer months when bush hogging, or any other type of mowing; could be due to the fact that you could be asphyxiated even worse while you hook up an implement, though I think it'd still be better out the back because I always shut the tractor off anyway; it could also be that a lot of people buying tractors these days are "new" to the whole tractor thing, and for them, the first thing they think of when they hear the word "tractor" is a garden tractor. If you look at the tractor's of today, particularly the 2k, 3k, and 4k series tractors, they look more like over grown garden tractors rather than the tractors of yesterday. A "new" buyer is going to find one that looks like a large garden tractor more aesthetically pleasing than a 5k or 6k series, which to me are 2 series that still resemble "real" tractors.

I definitely agree that the horizontal exhaust is a stupid design no matter how you look at it. Why anyone would want to sit there and constantly breath that all day is beyond me. It's definitely not helping your respiratory system in anyway.

BTW, congrats on getting your kit installed, and I'm glad it's made your "tractoring" experience more enjoyable.

Mine came with the vertical exhaust but it has a cab so I guess previous owner chose it mainly for looks, or didn't have a choice at the dealership, or maybe it helps to keep soot off the windshield. I have yet to see a 4720 in these parts that does not have the vertical exhaust, and I see quite a lot in winter.

It may have also been to keep fumes out of the cab, so they didn't get sucked into the cab intake. I believe "dirtworksequip" installed the vert. ex. kit on his 3320 for that very reason.
