I've got a friend that has a place up new Casey, IL and has an A/C tractor, I can't remember the size. He was looking to purchase a 6' King cutter disc from Tractor Supply and was curious what HP it would take to pull it. It's the heavy-duty with square tubing.

I have a JD 5103 and pull a 5' and at times can sit there and spin the tires.

Any recommendations? I recall a formula for this but couldn't find it.

I'll try to get the size of his tractor also. I think it's a D-17 maybe or something similar.

I have a Farmtrac 360 that is supposed to be 39 engine Hp, and I use an older Bush Hog 6' harrow that is reasonably heavy built with square tubing and have no problem pulling it , occasionaly when I have it ganged for heavy cutting not leveling and it is wet I have to put it in 4WD, hope this helps.

If it's a D-17, no problem with 49 hp on the drawbar. I pull a 6.5 ft offset disc with my Mahindra 5525 (54 hp engine, 45 hp pto) easily and it's a heavy disc with about 400 lb of additional weight I added to make it dig better.

I have a King Kutter 5 1/2' Box Frame Disc. 16 notched blades. I use it with my 30 HP (25 PTO) tractor. My soils are sandy loam and my tractor does a pretty good job with the disc......if I dont set it too agressively and weight it unnessesarily. I can get the disc to penetrate almost to the hubs....but it takes 4WD and using the diff lock at times when discing deeply.....or if the soil is loose from the first pass. I'm glad my disc is no larger.

The HP is not the issue....instead its the wieght and subsequent traction that become the issue. I have a loader on my tractor, fluid in the tires and my guess is that I weight about 3000 lbs. Another 1000 lbs would make a big difference in pullling a disc (or other ground engageing implements).

IMO that WD45 should be just right with a 6 foot disc. Due to the weight... and plenty of power.

I have a 66" 8 (16") disk harrow, and my 35hp tractor pulled it "just OK". Now I have a 46hp tractor, and it pulls it great.

Never seen a 6' or 72" disk, but I think they would have the same number of cutters, so would pull the same as a 66".
